Blackspot - Did I do the right thing?

I've been contemplating my recently purchased blackspot-infested roses from a reputable on-line nursery and just couldn't bring myself to plant them in that condition. I finally took my clippers, cut off all the tiny branches and every single leaf. The leaves went in the trash and I cleaned the clippers. After the fact, is that something I should have done? These are gallon plants of Austin's Cottage Rose and are fairly well-branched. I have no blackspot in my garden and was afraid I would infect my other plants.
