Is Golden Celebration a slow starter?
Comments (15)Many many thanks! This is very reassuring. GC does get rave reviews everywhere. He's definitely worth the wait till he leaps. Strawberryhill - My GC is in partial shade & has been kept moist since I put him in the ground. Except for when it rained, I watered every 2-3 days in the past couple of months (winter is quite warm & dry in Israel, though this year was relatively rainy). I just LOVE watering so it was real fun. Jeri - after reading your post I contacted the nursery. They said all their bare roots are budded to what they described as wild rose stock. They wouldn't specify which & I didn't want to press them. On their website they describe GC as a climber of up to 3 metres (which is why he got to be in the company of the Edens)....See Moreclimbing golden celebration
Comments (12)I have visited the David Austin Rose headquarters in Tyler, TX and had an opportunity to go through their warehouse/packing area. I was surprised (and a bit disappointed) to find out that they are labeling some of their large shrubs as both climbers and shrub roses; that is, the SAME, GENETICALLY IDENTICAL roses for Golden Celebration, Abe Darby, and a number of other roses are being labeled differently, some with the climbing label and some with the normal shrub label. Very confusing! There is only ONE Golden Celebration which grows for me as a large, arching shrub and which some may be able to train as a climber....See More'Golden Celebration' -- March 18, 2016
Comments (25)Here's my 2 year old G.C. that began its life with me as a band. It is naturally forming a full bush ( I only dead head blooms). As of today, it is about 5' wide and about 3 1/2' tall. Morning sun only. I had a grafted G.C. in the past, and it naturally grew into more of a climber. At no point was it bushy. However, it was growing in a filtered sun location. Comments (17)RRV is such a horrible way to lose a rose, but I suppose I'm just conditioned to overreact since the first rose I ever lost to it was my huge (HUGE! 30'x20' at least) City of York I had grown from my grandmother's plant. I was very sentimentally invested in it, and by the time I researched the problem and found it had RRV, it was way too far gone to even attempt to save it. Honestly, you can't imagine the trauma of removing a beloved rose that large....digging out the roots I (with the help of two brothers) ended up with a hole eight across and nearly four feet deep. I still have never replaced CoY, because as much as I miss it, another one just wouldn't be the same. But yes, I still grow roses, lol. (glutton for punishment) John...See Moretinyrose
