I'm surprised - it's alive!!

Well, I grow my roses in pots, and so this rose has had no other water than what rain it's gotten, because I thought it was dead. It was one of the many roses that almost died over wintered in my garage, because I didn't know what I was doing. So there's this really strong looking basal grwoth poking 2 inches above the soil. It's had no fertilizer of any kind and no watering and it's in a pot so it can't get good stuff from the ground.

I'm not even sure which rose it is - I threw away the tag thinking it was dead - I mean it's mid August already. So anyone who asks in the spring time - can my rose still be alive, it's been a few weeks, and nothing has happened - yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus - anything is possible when it comes to roses!! :)

Carol, I have only one question: was your rose a grafted rose or own root? If it was own root then Hurrah!!
If it was grafted, you'll have to dig gently down and see if this new growth is coming from above the graft (good) or below the graft (bad!) If it is the root stock that has risen from the dead, you might as well empty the pot out on the compost pile.
(Sorry to be a wet blanket.)

Anne - never thought of that. It is grafted. However, I had about 15 roses that survived my disasterous overwintering in the garden. Of those that have flowered - 10 - they've all come back as the rose I've bought. So, I'm hopeful. I'm not going to dig around in the pot. I'll just wait and see. Probably won't find out until next year, since it's so late in the season. But it sure was a surprise to see that growth. :)

I use MG for everything & have never had this happen unless the plant was way overdue for a repotting, even then my situation wasn't nearly as bad as what you're describing. I do repot or pot-up my plants every spring though, so maybe that's why I've never seen it this bad. I will have to watch my plants though, don't want this happening to me! :) Good luck w/ your new mixture! ~Shannon

Ingrid don't say that. lol I probably won't be flying anywhere until August anyway. Sandy I think it was more luck then anything. The weather here while I was gone was cloudy and rain so the greenhouse never got hot. Most of the plants I was concerned would dry out I set in trays of water and some were sealed in baggies. Everything was thoroughly saturated before I left. If it had been sunny here while I was gone I'm sure there would have been problems with plants in the greenhouse.

I had some fig cuttings that I gave up on after about 6 months, and stuck them into the vegetable garden as markers. They also took root and grew a few months later. Sometimes when you want them to grow, they dont, and when you dont care, they do. Similarly, last year I had chopped up grape prunings and used them for mulch, and wound up getting about 30 unwanted grape vines. These pieces were only about an inch long when I spread them around as mulch.
