A bit off the mark of your question, but according to another poster in zone 5 Michigan, most Austin roses are not cane-hardy there, but will be injured down to the ground or winter protection in a normal winter. This means that the plants should be set with the graft swelling below grade, several inches below where it was set in the usual nursery pot. If the graft freezes, you have only a rootstock plant left rather than the variety you purchased. If you planted too shallow, I'd recommend replanting all of them now, since roses from pots (if they were from pots) transplant more easily during the first few months than later. Otherwise you will need to maintain deep winter protection over the crowns for the life of the plants. Forgive me if you already knew about this. If you transplant during summer, temporary shade may be needed to alleviate wilting. Lawn chairs are good.

Climbers need to spread out semi-horizontally in order to bloom well. The space between the windows doesn't look big enough for a real climber. Possibly it could be extended sideways above the windows, although tending a large climber on a wall is a lot of trouble. Wrapping a rose around an 8' pillar would keep it narrower and provide the horizontality needed for good bloom. For example, you can use a 10' 4 x 4 with short horizontal arms attached at various heights, a rebar tripod, or a four-legged tower. You need a rose that is fairly flexible for wrapping. Some basic points are, don't try to grow a real climber on one of those dinky fan trellises, and be sure the variety you plant--whether shrub or climber--is fully cane hardy in your climate, or it won't make the kind of statement you are hoping for. You can get reliable advice about hardiness here, not necessarily at the garden center.

Just thought I'd post the results I had in one garden bed that's clay-loam. Last year I had amended this bed with home-made compost. Everything did well last year as first year plantings. This year they suffered from too little light. (I just put the roses there to get them through the winter and hoping they might like the eastern exposure. Heathcliff, Sugar Moon and Falstaff like sun in my neck of the woods, it seems. I'll probably be moving the viking Queen next Spring as she's a fraction of the size of her sister in full sun, and hasn't bloomed since Spring while her sister would be non-stop if not for the midge.) Anyway, the soil was very dry even with rain. I thought the heavy leaf layer prevented water. I stuffed the empty holes with alfalfa hay, compost and leaf mold until I decided what to plant. I also put the alfalfa under the leaves in the rest of the bed and gave it additional compost. Wow, when I went to plant Lavender Lassie and two hydrangeas, all the soil was so soft and fluffy and moist, even though we had less rain that earlier. I'm now prepping my holes in advance of next Spring and filling them with the same and covering the entire bed with alfalfa hay, etc. The new plantings have taken off even in the reduced light of late summer. I repeated this in another new bed and Mme Alfred Carriere and Awakening seem to love it even in their NE exposure. (Of course, they could just be responding to being in the ground vs. in pots. : ) ) Lesson learned. : ) I'm also trying gypsum on some new beds I'm prepping since they're on an incline. I'll report back.

Rosecanadian, male dogs are definitely silly, especially with their excessive marking habits. Of all the bushes and shrubs in my garden, he has to pick a fragrant rose to piss on, on the same spot, several times a day. I have given up following him around trying to catch him spraying on Sharifa, and resort to hose sharifa down then shake her foliage to get rid of excess water droplets. I do love dogs in general, and mine is just a big softie. so gotta forgive him.
