I have a tendency to want to grow EVERYTHING that is gorgeous and interesting to ME, and very often customers want to know what "this" flower is and "that" flower is, never knowing it existed! There are some here that are OBVIOUSLY not suitable for cutting (stem length-alyssum/hollyhock/morning glory, too "wild & rangy"-like ratibida, not long enough lasting-papaver?, or just not worth it in a zone with a short growing season like mine) but if something here "seems" unable to be cut, but YOU KNOW CAN be cut for SHORT bouquets, please inform me! I don't have that much more room in my yard, so I really need to pare this list down! Hi, re: your new varieties list - I believe Brandywine OTV is not very late season - Carolyn's book lists it as late midseason, and I bought it from Southern Exposure which lists its DTM as 72 days. Tomatofest has the same DTM. (I have not grown this yet, so no personal experience.) Stump Of The World, on the other hand, Tomatofest lists that as DTM 105 days! I would be concerned in your Zone that you might never see one. People seem to have mixed reviews about Stupice - the early that seems to have the most votes here is Sophie's Choice, which is also Dr. Carolyn Male's favorite early in her book. I haven't read anything negative about it. It's determinate and very short - don't know if that is appealing to you. The one that I am anticipating will be most satisfying in my Zone 6 garden is Anna Russian - 70 DTM and said to be very tasty. It's also a pink oxheart, so I don't know how it would stack up against Kosovo. Marianna's Peace also has very positive reviews here, which convinced me to try it this year. From what I've read, I would definitely keep these on your new list for this year: Brandywine OTV Aunt Ginny's Purple NAR Marianna's Peace I haven't heard anything about the others. Good luck! I skipped the first group b'c you already had your mind made up on those. A few cherries (one of each): Black Cherry Ildi Green Doctors or some as-yet-undetermined variety (I really want to try Green Doctors, but I have yet to find it anywhere where there is actually something else I want... and I hate to pay shipping for one seed packet.) **** There are several sources for Green Doctors and for some of the sources there are lots of other interesting varieties. Jeff Casey at Casey's Heirlooms lists both Green Doctors and Green Doctors Frosted. Glenn at Sandhill Preservation with over 400 varieties to chose from lists Green Doctors and I think will be adding GD Frosted for 2011. Adam at Gleckler Seedmen will be listing both Green Doctors and GD Frosted for 2011, and there are lots of rare, hard to find varieties there now and more to be added for 2011 Mike at Victory Seeds lists it and loads of other varieties there as well Carol at Knapps is also listing it. In the link below to Tania's T-base data you can go from GD to GD Frosted if you wish just by clicking on the link on the GD page. ***** And one each of: Black Krim , delete Brad's Black Heart, keep Brandy Boy , delete Cherokee Purple or Indian Stripe, I'd chose Indian Stripe Danko , already chosen, a variety I listed in the SSE YEarbook and I love it. Green Giant , already chosen Joe Thieneman's Australian Heart , keep Kellogg's Breakfast or KBX , chose KBX Marianna's Peace , delete Just my selections for 6 of them. And no way to determine disease tolerances b'c you haven't told us which diseases are a problem for you. And productivity can be very variable from year to year, so I picked the ones I did primarily on taste and good productivity as grown by me in my zone 5 garden. I wasn't really sure if you wanted input on the paste varieties but in case you do want some suggestions I'd suggest considering: Heidi Mama Leone Opalka Martino's Roma Carolyn, who doesn't consdier Amish Paste to be a paste variety b'c it's too juicy. There are other varieties with the word paste as part of the name that aren't paste varieties either. Long TOm is just a long red and I think there are better long reds such as Opalka, etc, and I've never been enthusiastic about any of the San Marzanos or Costolutos as far as that goes. Jackmanii is a great one to start with. My mom (a total nongardener) had one put in by a landscaper, and with her total neglect in clay soil it grew and bloomed every year until she sold the house. If I was visiting during the cold season, I would prune it for her and give it some mulch, but otherwise it was on its own. Great plant! The summer blooming plants are the easiest to my mind. The few clematis I've found to have issues have been the early large-flowered, though some have been trouble-free such as HF Young, Rebecca, and Piilu. One of my favorite summer bloomers is Mikelite, which starts blooming (just a few flowers) from a two year old quart plant in its first year in my garden. It blooms a long time; I have photos of it blooming from mid-June to mid-August, though it is most full from late June to late July. Here it is July 20, just over a month after it started blooming, and this is its second year in my garden. To get a large plant, it will be more expensive . . . I have also found around here that sources such as big box stores and other non-nurseries are more likely to only have type 2 prune plants, the early large-flowered varieties, since they are blooming when many folks are looking for some color to plant. I've found plants in big box stores are more likely to be mislabeled or unlabeled. I have looked, but here they aren't less expensive than the few I've found in nurseries, but I live in an area with not a lot of choices.
