Would some of you help me pare this seed list down?

Hi everyone,

I haven't posted here very much, so most of you probably don't "know" me. :0)

I am a small "grower", in the sense that I just sell bouquets locally, to co-workers, & other people I meet, etc. I have done bouquets for graduation parties, retirement parties, rehearsal dinners, bridal showers, teacher gifts, etc. It has been mostly word of mouth w/business cards my daughter made me a few years ago. My "business" has grown somewhat each year, but I don't grow for farmer's markets as many of you do. Still, I enjoy it immensely, and my husband and kids are very proud of me too!

Anyway, we have about 70 rose bushes, a hundred or more different asiatic, trumpet, OT, oriental & species lilies, several spuria and siberian irises. We also have interesting daffodils, some (not many) tulips, peonies, lupine, echinaceas, baptisia australis, daisies, dicentras,

monarda, japanese ferns, kniphofia, etc.

I was wondering if it would be ok with all of you if I listed the seeds I have collected (thru trades on GW and commercial seeds), and asked you to "critique" it/help me pare it down maybe 50% (to the best kinds/least difficult cultivars for a zone 5a garden!)

I DO NOT have a hoophouse or anything...it's all growing in my front, side and back yards! I have been winter-sowing as much as I can, with mixed results.

I will wait for your "go-ahead" before I list them all, because I don't want to overwhelm you.

Thanks so much for your warm welcoming attitude, Pitt. I just didn't want to post too much. I have a tendency to want to grow EVERYTHING that is gorgeous and interesting to ME, and very often customers want to know what "this" flower is and "that" flower is, never knowing it existed!

There are some here that are OBVIOUSLY not suitable for cutting (stem length-alyssum/hollyhock/morning glory, too "wild & rangy"-like ratibida, not long enough lasting-papaver?, or just not worth it in a zone with a short growing season like mine) but if something here "seems" unable to be cut, but YOU KNOW CAN be cut for SHORT bouquets, please inform me! I don't have that much more room in my yard, so I really need to pare this list down!

Also, if any of these are much better GROWING FROM AN ESTABLISHED PLANT, instead of by my starting from seed, would you mind letting me know? PS-I don't have any phlox yet! :0)

Also, many of them you can take cuttings of...You can see my roses at their absolutely worst...and compare to what you saw in the spring. Don't grow that particular Armeria, but I am not a huge fan. They are floppy if not planted in sharp draining soil and always get overrun with weeds (which are near impossible to pluck out of there...) I don't have that Astrantia cultivar, but I say thumbs up. I love all Astrantias ;-) Campanula persifolia 'Alba' is a nice bellflower, but pretty common so I wouldn't personally special order it. Very easy from seed. Campanula glomerata isn't rare either. Some have found it to be an invader. I haven't, but then again, mine is planted in a "difficult" spot. ;-) Echinops has been kind of invasive here. Plus the seedlings arn't the easiest to dig out. Just my personal experience. Wouldn't plant it again... I would skip the DBM Geum, or all Geums of the chiloense species. I've found they tend to resent wet winters and will live a couple years at best. Any of the coccineum, rivale, or triflorum species (or hybrids of...) do much better in areas that have wet winters/springs. Long lived so long as you divide every few years. Delps are short lived for me. I am a lazy gardener and don't like to replant perennials often so don't grow them anymore for that reason ;-) Ditto what felisa said about 'Red Cauli'. I have tried it twice. That thing has been ONE STEM for several years now- that thing barely makes an attempt to survive, let alone thrive. That is about all I grow from your list... CMK

I've been growing Lambert Closse for several years now. It is a nice, bushy shrub--doesn't get bs and retains all its leaves--really nice and full. It blooms a lot, but does have short periods of rest although there are usually at least a couple blooms even then. Blooms are pretty shades of medium pink in the center to light pink/whitish on the outer petals. Its major limitation is that it doesn't hold its bloom shape very well--kind of a muddled look (I think they call it)--but not unattractive. In other words, you wouldn't stop to admire a solitary bloom, but the whole bush covered with blooms is good-looking. I might be inclined to plant it away from a path--where the whole shrub can be viewed at more of a distance. Don't know how cold hardy it is up north, but it was one of the few roses in my garden that survived the great Easter Freeze this year mostly unscathed. Let's see--what else? Mine is about 3x3, but a couple newer canes are taller so I'm guessing by next year it will be closer to 4x3. Don't remember if it has fragrance. Kate

It makes me sad that I cannot find a better picture than this to show you my Sonia Rykiel. This is just one late season flower and yet it formed this lovely thing. This rose creates the prettiest colored and deliciously scented flowers. And they are in clusters. The plant grows large and wide but the roses come all along the canes if you dont force them to be upright. I let mine sprawl but tie the canes in the way to bamboo poles and a metal trellis was pushed in the back to provide support and keep the canes from blocking the walk. This is one of my favorites along with DA's Kathryn Morely for color and shape. But where Kathryn holds her blooms up, Sonia lets hers hang sometimes because of the weight of the huge flowers in a cluster. Fine with me. I like looking up at them. If I had to do it again, I would give this rose a nice big trellis on a wall and keep tying it in like a climber. It is thirsty. It wants the best of everything. There's a wait between repeats and extreme heat spoils the blossoms. This rose has a complex beautiful perfume. Jude the Obscure is like that for me. Different and wonderful. It stands out from the rest and I never met anyone who smelled it and didn't say it was one of the best roses they ever smelled. I grow a few stingy DAs for the scent/color/shape of the blooms. Sonia is more generous than any of them. She has been disease free for me. I love this rose. I had to move it a few times to find the right spot and then wait for her to settle in. I planted an Abe Darby across from her and they are looking about the same size and growth habit. I'm glad I took a chance on this rose. SdlM is a classic. You have the climate for it and it is a workhorse. Plus it smells great and looks stunning. Lots of us who got SdlM are now growing the sports because we like it so much. Every year it gets better and better. The only thing I ever had issues with was a little mildew now and then. I think with more sun, I probably wouldn't have it.

How about down to 10%. If you did all those you would need 5 FMs, unless you just have a few of each. You could plant it all and see what comes up.

Phyl -- Wow, how would I pare down someone else's list when I'm over two hundred on my own!!

If just seeding now, then most of the perennials, snaps, etc. would be late for this season. Most of the poppies, hermerocallis, cardinal climber & gazanias wouldn't be ideal cuts. I'd skip the petite marigolds & Bijou sweet peas for their short stems, etc. (BTW Bijou has been around a long time and I helped name the original little baby!!!)

A few of my favorites to go with your established plants are the cinnamon basil, Amazon Neon dianthus,scabious & cactus zinnias, statice & Celosia spicata.
