Help!! We may be moving!!

I am in zone 5 and we may be moving...We have decided to try to escape Nebraska's high tax climate and move to a smaller town in IA. What do I do with my roses? Could I dig them and keep them in pots til next year? Is it too late to try to do that now? I wouldn't dig all of them, just the one's I am really attached to like Vavoom, We Salute You, Remember Me, Dolly Parton, Miss All-American Beauty, Trumpeter, Paradise, Sundowner, Double Delight, Heaven on Earth, Melody Perfume, Tournament of Roses...Oh that may be hard too:0)thanks for any tips!! mel

you can dig them now and put them in pots, just make sure the pots are large enough, water well, and keep in shade from afternoon sun for a couple of weeks until they adjust.i've often thought about selling and moving somewhere warmer, but i can't leave my roses, and i don't want to dig them, either!! i wish you luck..donna

If you selling the house, you may want to mention that those roses DO NOT come with the house. I was heart broken when we moved it and there were few big holes in the backyard where roses used to be. She took them afterwards. Half the charm of this house was the roses.

Well, of course you want to take your rocks with you! This is a hypothetical dilemma we have debated many times. We are not intending to ever move, but the thought of what would happen to all of the rocks we worked so hard to get here is devastating if we were forced to leave. (I was born here and the land's been in the family for over 100 years, hopefully they'll take me out horizontally) I can completely understand your sorrow over leaving your rocks behind. Do you have any idea of the approximate distance the rocks would have to transported? (i.e. will you be in the same state?) There may be some quarry related trucking companies in your area who will haul them for you; we hired a semi 'rock truck' last November to bring in our last 120 tons of flatrock from the nearby quarry for $60 an hour. Hauling cost for the six loads was $300, however the quarry was only eight miles away. Due to the sizes of the stones involved in our project, we were not able to hire a 'normal' dump truck, as huge rocks are hard on the boxes of the dump truck and their owners don't like holes punched thru them when the rocks are loaded. Rock trucks have rounded reinforced beds much better able to withstand the abuse of hauling the truly big stuff. There are also flatbed semis such as Gottagarden hired for her project. I don't know how big your stones are, but there has to be someone somewhere who would work with you, it's probably just going to come down to the expense. We have also hauled many tons of rock ourselves with our car and trailer, and it can be done (we also scavenge construction sites and road cuts!)depending, of course, on the size of the rock and how far you have to travel. You could try Oregon. It isn't south, but it certainly isn't conservative--at least most of it isn't--and the winters are mild. It is said that there are more PhD store clerks in Oregon than any other state. There are places in Oregon with reasonable land as there are so few jobs that pay well. Progressives have driven most of the employers out of the state, but the Progressives who live there love it--that is why there are so many well-educated folks working retail; they don't want to leave!

That kitchen makes no sense at all. You have only 3 mimsy little sections of countertop to work on (besides the island). But the island is clearly designed primarily for eating. Think of this: When you're baking or prepping a turkey, where do you put the big stuff as you work? You have no counter section big enough to hold the turkey pan and the bowl of stuffing as you fill the bird, no counter section big enough for a cookie sheet and a stand mixer. And don't suggest doing the raw turkey on the island, because there is no sink there for it and the island is for eating; you don't want raw turkey goop on the island. You have no continuous countertop flow between the sink and the stove (because of the oven), so every drippy thing has to be carried across the floor because there's an oven in the way. Slip hazard. And with the freezer, pantry, and wine/coffee bar 25 feet away, it gives the sense that the whole 625 sq. ft. space is kitchen. There's no place to put a dining table that allows it to have its own space. It will always look like a kitchen table, caught in the cross traffic between two 6-foot doorways. Do-over.

I agree with everyone else! It’s going to be great. It’s overwhelming right now, I know ... new place, unpacking, etc. But once you start getting your things out, it’ll come together. :) I agree with you about rugs ... just to show a couple of basic examples of pulling the colors together this way. There are lots of great choices out there that have grays, browns, and other colors together. I just did a very quick search, these aren’t the best, but I hope it gives an idea. I moved 550 roses 50 miles when I moved to a larger home with more space for roses. Our old house was not ready to sell when we moved so I was able to pot them up at my leisure.
As I moved them, they were placed in a large circle in my new front yard (the lawn sucked so that was not a problem).
I put a 4 foot plastic fence around them and covered them with oak leaves for the winter. This was in September 2001.
They overwintered Ok and were planted the following spring after I had removed some trees for sun and prepared the beds. As I dug them up I cut them back to about 12 inches.
I used big pots, lots of water, and excess soil from the beds. I had lots of excess soil due to heavy use of organic mulches and fertilizers. Because they were moved in a open trailer, cutting back kept them from too much water loss as the wind blew over them. I also gave the roots time to recover without having to support a lot of foliage.
Just plan ahead. If traveling a long distance with them place them in a enclosed trailer or truck. You've only got 12 listed. That many will fit easily in the back of a small SUV. I can move 25 potted roses in my Escape with the back seats down.
If removed and potted after they go dormant, chances for survival will increase. Just provide some winter protection for the potted roses. Leaves piled high over them will work.

I just moved and did what is suggested above.
Out of 200 I moved about 50 which were not easy to replace and I didn't lose a single one.
They'll all be planted in their new home within 7-10 days.

I took several of my roses with me...and they have come back with no problem.In fact some came back better than before! Take them with you....you will be glad you did. If you dig them now and put them in pots remember to water and keep them out of direct sun for a while.

As a former RE agent, let me add my broker told us to always have sellers list items that are moving with them--whether plants, or things in the house like chandeliers. Actually the best thing is to remove the item & replace with a reasonable looking one--then people don't feel they are missing something. If it's plants that can be divided then offer to do that.
I have often seen a note in a fact sheet saying some shrub that was planted when the baby was born, etc, was going to be taken along on the move.
You never know who will buy the house---some people want 200 roses and others will dig them up and put in a pool.
