domestic animal story - warning, not about roses

In April, Frankie (adopted skinny black and white barn cat, we're Italian American, what else do you call a skinny Italian cat in a tux....)8 years old and healthy, scratched my hand deeply while I was crating him for the annual vet visit. I washed it out, threw on a bandaid, and ignored it. It was Friday morning. It hurt a bit over the weekend, but seemed to be healing up ok. Tuesday I couldn't close my hand when I woke up. Tuesday pm I finally called the doc, who sent me straight to ER, where I had a fever of 103 - yup, "cat scratch fever" - and I just thought it was a Todd Rundgren song title! I was told that when ignored it can be deadly.

So sometimes the danger is lurking in the furball at the foot of the bed.....
