WARNING: A Rant about slash and burn garden crews

I'm in tears. Yesterday as I drove down the hill to the bottom of our street I saw a crew working and got a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. Sure enough, they had chopped almost to the ground the most magnificent specimen of Alister Stella Gray I had ever seen. It was at least 12 ft high and wide as a freestanding bush and was still in almost full bloom. All that's left is a center stalk about 2 ft high. I pulled over and yelled at them, told them they were ruining (killing?) the rose. Their response was for me to take it up with their boss but it was already too late. This is after I had spoken to the owner several times about the identity of the rose and how wonderful it was and got a promise from him only to do moderate pruning. I am devastated.

I just don't understand how people can hire "garden" crews that clearly know nothing about gardening, just hacking and killing. I know this also happens in the cemeteries much to the detriment of the roses.

Sadly,
Diane
