1-4 flowers per stem. A grandiflora? Then maybe, Crimson Bouquet?

Maybe Ingrid Bergman? It has a light scent, and the flowers last forever. I think it is the color you are looking for. It is a true red that starts dark and fades lighter.

I would say it is a stronger scent than "light." It's really quite a nice scent for an HT, though not as intense as DD. On my screen on HMF, Ingrid Bergman is the right color but it says a maximum height of 39" and this rose can get nearly twice that. It does say "strong fragrance." Some of the pics make it looks like it can have weak stems and I have never seen a weak stem on my bush (which is, granted quite mature).

Crimson Bouquet looks too light a red.

Are you for sure it's not Mr. Lincoln? Mine changes color with the weather and it sounds a lot like it, Bare legs, tall, # of flowers per stem. What color is the new foliage? Mr. Lincoln is very reddish. Here's a pic of my Mr. Lincoln. I love him, he is the showpiece of my front yard!

I was wavering toward Mr. Lincoln even though someone (I have totally forgotten who) told me they thought it was not Mr. Lincoln. But now I've seen a bunch of them around here, labeled, and they are all a very pretty but more blue-pink tone of red than mine. Not quite as dark, either.

I love Mr. Lincoln and would be perfectly happy if that's what I have, but it just doesn't seem to quite match.

The new growth is reddish but as I understand it this is common in any plant that has red flowers. At least it seems to work that way in roses and orchids... !

Now that I look again I don't think this is going to help because the photo isnot true to color. Too light. Hmph! I'll try to photograph it again. The second flush is fading and most of the blooms burned in the heatwave the last couple days, so I'll wait for another few buds to open.

Hey I have ingrid bergman and its about 5 feet tall, the scent depends, its dark red at first but fades as it ages but only the edges, looks a lot like yours

Ooh and one more thing the buds look like a little ball before they open.

Chrysler Imperial? AARS 1953.

How about Opening Night? Chrysler Imperial has a fantastic fragrance. Did you recently purchase your home? Veteran's Honor is red, but maybe too new. How about Black Magic?

ItÂs definitely not Mr. Lincoln based on leaves and petal reflexes. And itÂs also not Chrysler Imperial  leaves are too shiny.

I don't think it is Black Magic since that doesn't have a scent or at least not much of one. Ingrid Bergman has never had a weak stem for me. The scent can vary a lot on it. I don't have any idea how tall it would get as mine suffers a lot of winter dieback. Do the flowers last a long time on the bush? The flowers on Ingrid last a very long time.

Well, which red rose has semi-glossy olive-colored foliage?

The only one I can recall is John S Armstrong, a grandiflora with some clustering and a very good rose that is never mentioned. I recall the plant being bushy rather than leggy, and I think the young leaves having reddish stems or central veins.

The petals are certainly shaped like Veteran's Honor, but the color is a little bright. I'm going with VH!

I think it is VH also. Mine is tall, (bare knees hidden behind perennials, LOL), and has a good fragrance. THey last for a long time as cut flowers and can be admired from a great distance. THis is one rose I do not want to be without!

Diane, I forgot to mention that I had considered CI. I don't think we have quite the fragrance and I think the color is too red -- same comments as for Mr. Lincoln. I would love to get my nose into a CI for comparison (and sheer sniffing pleasure).

Doesn't VH quill more than my rose? I of course have the benefit of seeing many of its flowers... it doesn't quill much, and it seems like VH does. I also have seen VH a number of times "in the flesh" and I think it's a somewhat lighter red than my plant.

Opening NIght feels wrong. The only bush shot in HMF shows only single stems and unless it's been uniformly disbudded, that's a disconnect.

Michael, John S Armstrong seems the most similar anyone's come up with. I gotta wonder! The foliage on my plant is all red when it comes in new, though -- does that rule it out? I posted a pic of the shrub during a thread on pruning a while back and it was completely red leaves at that point (this spring, new growth).

I bought the house just over two years ago. It was built in '87. This rose and the "Peace" are both obviously very mature, at least 4-5 years old if I don't miss my guess. So they could be anything introduced up to 2000 or so, I imagine.

A little late in the bloom season, but better late than never. Nickel thought it was too hot for a fluffy little black dog to walk around in the sun, and I'm certainly thirsty myself!

OK -- my rose is NOT Mr. Lincoln, Chrysler Imperial, Veteran's Honor, or Olympiad. It is not Crimson Bouquet or Crimson Glory or Veteran's Honor. The two that struck me as closest were Oklahoma and Ingrid Bergman, though I thought the flowers on Ingrid (which were otherwise VERY similar) were smaller and less scented than on my plant. I am not confident about the Oklahoma ID and it was the first similar red I saw so my brain cells are pretty much burnt out and I can't remember enough now. I also scrawled "Firefighter???" in my notebook and I seem to recall people complaining about it, which I'm not sure would happen with a rose that grows as nicely as mine does.

Maybe it IS one of those, and I'm sure I'm nowhere near good enough at this to be sure. I know there are variations based on soil and such... it just seems odd that the one I have been growing no-spray and with, um, somewhat spotty and less than professional care would have more and bigger flowers than the ones at the Portland Rose Garden... ya know?

I did not see an Opening Night which probably means it wasn't blooming there... or maybe I wandered blithely past in in a heat haze! And I did not see a John S Armstrong, which is too bad considering I thought it looked so promising for my ID.

My plant is the most floriferous rose I have, the flowers are large, well formed, and durable, it has scent, it has good stems, disease resistance is pretty decent... I just can't believe it isn't something well known and well thought of!

How about Papa Meilland? Just a guess.

Carol, you know, Papa Meilland looks very much like my rose, at least in pictures. Is it considered a vigorous bloomer?

Michael, Christian Dior is very pretty but it looks like the petals reflex way more (both in number and degree) than those on my rose.

Thanks for the ideas! I have a feeling that unless a really comprehensively good rose identifier comes to my yard, I may never know. Since I tend to be a little terrier-like when I get focused on something like this... I'm sure I'll keep worrying it to death from time to time. :)

What about thorns? My Oklahoma is quite thorny. It was one of my first roses, so I bought it potted 5 years ago. In my garden, it is prone to BS. The blooms are huge, however (some of them as big as my hand- I'll try to find some pics). I wouldn't call the smell just "nice" either. It is the most wonderful smelling rose in my garden. One bloom can waft its fragrance clear across the yard!

Nicklesmum - I have no idea :) Mine is a first year and planted in a pot. It's really started to fill out, but I'm not too sure about how the blooms are going to be.
