I don't know whether that rose is Super Dorothy, but I do have a question.

You want to put this rose over an arbor, but you say that that is "scary." I'm not understanding why you would think it's scary. It seems to be just what the rose needs.

Robert, I am glad you responded to the arbor issue. I actual have a few New Dawns to incorporate into this project along with this rose. Last year I moved all my big roses to the back of my garden. I put this small one foot root cutting in the back of them. Not expecting much. The first year the rose grew from a one foot cutting with roots to long canes that I flipped over the sheppard hooks and tomato stakes. Then she grew about 15 feet. At this time her few canes were amazing to watching grow and I started to experience my first real rambler. I did not have a plan or an arbor. I left her over the winter. Well, this year the canes continued to grow and have self rooted here and there. I now have a plan to work in two arbors and a fence to make a rose tunnel in the back of the garden. I am worried about how I will actual do all this and make it look right. I admit it really looks possible because she loops around the stake then straightens out and sprawls over the ground, so she only has one loop, she is not overly thorny and it looks possible. I have to make the transfer this year because she is shooting out new canes. If any one is interested in this project I can take pictures as I go.

If a once-bloomer, it is probably Dorothy Perkins, a likely hand-me-down rose. She does gallop around tip-rooting herself and does bloom a bit later than most roses.

Yes, It has to be Dorothy Perkins! I googled many of the references for Dorothy Perkins and she is a fit!

It is difficult for me to identify roses---there are so many with similar looks---My Super Dorothy is in her first year. Her bloom time is long and she does look like your picture---I'm waiting to see if she reblooms this year---

she is dark pink and then fades to a lighter pink----So far I'm happy with her---

When trying to ID a mystery rose it is usually best to go with the obvious first. In this case it would be 'Dorothy Perkins'. Indeed, it does look exactly like DP. For confirmation look for "bronze" colored foliage on the ends of new fast growing canes and an almost complete lack of bristles on the pedicels.

Looks like Dorothy Perkins to me. DP is prone to mildew and does not drop its petals very cleanly after it blooms, at least in my experience. I keep it under control by removing the old canes at the end of the season and keeping only the new ones.

I am going to look for bristles on the pedicels, the color of the tips of the new canes and if any new buds are forming, which would indicate a long bloom time.

I have a rose tunnel in my garden. It is one of my favorite places in my yard, but, I wish I had done some of it differently.

What I did was to take 20 ft sections of rebar and bent them into "arches." I then took two arches for each segment and drove them into the ground about 18 inches on each end while having the two criss-crossed. The arches are defintely NOT tall enough, nor are they sturdy enough for the roses I had selected (mainly Barbier ramblers and roses similar to these).

When I re-do this tunnel...I will drive 5 ft sections of steel pipe into the ground about 2 ft and slide the rebar arches into them (instead of driving the rebar into the ground. This will give me an addition 1.5 ft of height as well as much more sturdiness.

I've made a few of these "enhanced" rebar arches already, and, so far, I'm very pleased.

Check out hartwoodroses.com....connie has a a tunnel of them. It is going to be ideal.

Robert, any more clues on how to make this tunnel successful. Would you incorporate arbors?

I have enclosed the best picture I could get of my particular situation. To the left is a row of 4 New Dawns, The NDÂs are leaning to the sun the south. About 5 feet behind is my Dorothy Perkins. The plan is (was, help decide) to start the tunnel with an arbor about 10 feet to the left side of Dorothy ( placing her in the middle) and place an arbor at the end of my tunnel. The tunnel would end with another Dorothy. I have room to make the tunnel as long as 40 feet. I was thinking of ending the tunnel with an arbor. Between the arbors I was going to create the tunnel. I was thinking it would be easier to train my existing New Dawns laterally because the cans are so stiff and plant tall climbers between the New Dawns.

However, your comments have me re-thinking my grand plan. Simple arches might look more grand and the emphasis on the roses. The reason I'm hanging on to the arbor idea is becasue before you wrote, I was in the process of scraping and painting my arbors. This project going to happen, your timing is perfect.

Also, I could not find a picture of Hartland RoseÂs tunnels. What section is the tunnel under? Maggie
