Super Dorothy.

I bought a lonely Dorothy Perkins - spotted it forlorn looking in Bunnings - which gave me a reason to erect a rose arch for it to climb on. Dorothy Perkins was a rose my long deceased mother grew years and years ago so It's a bit sentimental. The whole exercise prompted me to go wandering the rose catalogues, and in my Botanica's Pocket Roses book I found Super Dorothy, a repeating, though scentless, cultivar of D. P. Google as I may I can't find any Australian nursery that stocks it or breeder who breeds it. Am wondering if anyone out there can suggest where I might either purchase the plant or get a few cuttings to propagate. Any advice most appreciated.

No responses well, no matter, seems nowhere in Aus is Super Dorothy available so I simple bought the next best thing: Climbing Pinkie.

I wish I'd seen this query last year, but alas am only recently computer literate! There is a paler pink sport of Dorothy Perkins called Dorothy Dennison which is available from Thomas for Roses in Sth Australia. They have an on-line catalogue.

Robert, any more clues on how to make this tunnel successful. Would you incorporate arbors? I have enclosed the best picture I could get of my particular situation. To the left is a row of 4 New Dawns, The NDÂs are leaning to the sun the south. About 5 feet behind is my Dorothy Perkins. The plan is (was, help decide) to start the tunnel with an arbor about 10 feet to the left side of Dorothy ( placing her in the middle) and place an arbor at the end of my tunnel. The tunnel would end with another Dorothy. I have room to make the tunnel as long as 40 feet. I was thinking of ending the tunnel with an arbor. Between the arbors I was going to create the tunnel. I was thinking it would be easier to train my existing New Dawns laterally because the cans are so stiff and plant tall climbers between the New Dawns. However, your comments have me re-thinking my grand plan. Simple arches might look more grand and the emphasis on the roses. The reason I'm hanging on to the arbor idea is becasue before you wrote, I was in the process of scraping and painting my arbors. This project going to happen, your timing is perfect. Also, I could not find a picture of Hartland RoseÂs tunnels. What section is the tunnel under? Maggie

Cecilia, I have yet to see any mildew on this rose. It seems very healthy. No fungal diseases yet, no pests. Beth, thanks for the link to your picture. Yes, my rose does look like that. It also behaves the way you describe...no mildew, very little scent, light pink blooms. I really have no way of knowing how old this rose is either, except that it's obviously got a huge root system underneath and the canes i cut back were very, very long. I've only gotten a few blooms yet though it might bloom more of course, and it also might be reacting to the severe haircut it received last fall. One other thing about it...it produced a baby about a foot away from it. That rose is already getting sizeable. On that link in your other thread, it says that Dorothy Perkins roots very easily and often sparks other roses off of it. Maybe this is another clue that it is a Dorothy Perkins?

How is your Cl Pinkie doing? I got one last year also, it's the fastest growing rose band ever. It's still alive, I left it in a large pot on the lower deck in the winter, have to plant it in the garden this spring. It's 2-3' tall.

Hi summersrythem. I was funnelweb: My two climbing pinkies are thriving, planted them to grow on an arch last October (14) and they've almost reached the top and are developing buds. I think they show a lot of promise for the coming spring /summer. If you're still around, I'll keep you informed.

Yep, summersrythm_z6a, if you're still around, both have climbed the arch and are a mass of flowers. Scent is slight but there; thorns are negligible and not a problem; flowers are a little smaller than I expected but ok. It is, however, a little prone to black spot which hampers, or interferes with flowering. However, Triphorine, or similar fungicide keeps that at bay - unfortunately, with roses, fungicides /insecticides are a necessity, used sparingly, though, they are ok.

Thanks for the info blckrose. Just saw this. Getting 3 Super Dorothy this spring to climb on trees. Do yours repeat?
