Northland Rosarium sale...and finally get to see some DAs

My mom and I are planning to go to Northland Rosarium tomorrow, for their end of the summer sale...and to see some David Austins, we haven't seen blooming, in the past.

Mom would love to get some more roses, especially DAs, but she's wondering...where can she put another rose bed? I told her she should join the forum. Everyone seems to have that same problem! LOL

I should have said 'finally get to see and SMELL some DA's' since you can tell the roses are beautiful, in the catalog. We're looking forward to finding out if the fragrance is as wonderful, as we've been hoping! :)

What a beautiful day for a garden tour! Sunny and warm, but not too hot and lots of shady spaces to sit and take a break, too. The gazebos, tunnels, arbors, etc. and so many nice trees. Just a wonderful garden :)

And, lots of fun going through the greenhouses, too. We did see lots of lovely roses, but we were most excited that the two we bought (sight unsmelled LOL) were so fragrant! Mom had purchased Golden Celebration and I had chosen Cottage Rose...so very excited that they turned out to be so beautiful and fragrant, in real life.

They'll be open in September for a few days, just to see the hydrangeas, so we'll be planning another trip, then. Not only beautiful flowers, but so many good ideas for laying out the gardens, themselves. I really want a formal rose garden, now...with a deer fence! LOL

Berkeley Horticulture, near San Francisco, had an odd rose assortment this year. Hundreds of H.T.s and Floribundas and Shrubs, the usual suspects that they sell, in addition to a few roses that I went to at once, and ignored most of the moderns: R. banksia lutea, Mutabilis, R. glauca. "Mlle Cecille Brunner" which were marked down to $15 each, and I bought two for the price of one. They had dozens of cultivars of Austins, (Austin roses have lots of advertising) but I wasn't looking for Austin roses. c. 50 miles from me, Regans in Fremont California used to sell a few Old Garden Roses but these were hidden in the back of the nursery, 50 yards away from the rows of rosebushes for sale, and I asked why they had them put so far away I was told "No one buys them" - gee, I wonder why? There were no signs posted that even hinted that an old garden rose might be on the property and I had to ask, and be shown where they were hidden away. I bought a "Mme. Alfred Carriere" Rugosas, and a "Paul Neyron" beside a "Felicite Parm." If I'd been a newbie and bought Paul Neyron and F.P." I would have wondered why the Felicite Parm. never re-bloomed Luxrosa

Well, Judi, The Prince doesn't really like it hot and dry, so he will challenge you about that. The plant itself doesn't mind hot and dry, but the blooms burn and get weird in the heat. I should take photos nekst summer to illustrate that. In your climate, some shade might be in order, but he's a rose, so he'll need sun, too. All my roses get the same regimen: lots of water, a wonderful compost I buy (Nu Life Organic compost, if you can find it; it's a regional product), applied in late fall and into winter when the weather permits. I'm still applying it. In late February, every rose gets a good feeding of Plant Tone or Holly Tone, whichever I have on hand, and in mid March, the roses get a feeding of Lilly Miller Organic granular fertilizer for acid loving plants. My soil is alkaline so I give this fertilizer for that reason. I'm sure your soil is alkaline, too. I've repeated this regimen so many times on the forum, so if you've read it before, I apologize. My roses don't get a lot after the spring feedings. As I said, all the roses are equal to me and get the same diet. I hope you're successful with His Highness. My rose is a continuous bloomer, by the way, so he blooms a lot when it would be best for him to rest (heat). Diane

Sheila, I don't know if it's a winter thing or not. The only rose I lost to gophers was in winter years ago. But I lost a couple of tomato plants to them, and they tried to take out New Dawn, but did not succeed. This was back in 2007, and ND was too tough for the blasted gophers. One cane died completely back while the rest of the plant forged ahead. And then, like a resurrection from the grave, the New Dawn cane that had died back slowly began growing again, and triumphed over the grave, crawling its way to its fellows higher up. It was something to see, and took a couple of months. (I should put the previous paragraph into a novel). But back to your gophers, I think you will prevail with the gopher hawks, though what a lot of work, heartache, and expense those rodents have caused you. You almost hope some of them went back to the winery. I'll bet anything that winery is having gopher problems. I need to get serious with the voles. I did put some d-Con way down a couple of tunnels, but I need to do more. It's just too wet currently. As a Doc, do you know what is in d-Con? It's warfarin, so the rodents don't have a nice death. I suppose it's safer than strychnine. Good luck in the upcoming season. I wish there was a "Rent a Badger" Service in your area. Diane

Diane, I agree with local nurseries where 5-gallon roses can be really expensive (I think Regan has 5-gallon David Austin for $60.) However, in general the price for bare root roses of mail order websites are roughly similar, so I'm a bit surprised that Northland price is higher than the rest. Glad you had fun. You are so smart wanting to smell DAs before you buy. I've had a couple that I purchased "sight unsmelled" and was disappointed. (I really dislike his myrrh fragrance).

You trip sounds wonderful and something I could use as a respite from the horrible heat here. Doesn't Spokane have an outstanding public garden with lots of roses, too? Did you take any pics? We'd love to see them because the Rosarium sounds beautiful. Diane
