Kousa Dogwood Pests

I have a young Cornus kousa 'Gold Star', which was obtained as a 1st year graft and planted in the garden 2 years ago. It is now about 4 ft. tall. Yesterday I noticed that one of the branch tips was on the ground and paid little attention, thinking that the wind had broken it. This AM, I found about a half dozen more on the ground. Inspection of the the tree revealed that they had been cleanly cut off adjacent to a leaf node, leaving a stub at the end of each affected branch.

Close inspection did not reveal the presence of any type of insect. A search of GW and Google did not list any source of information as to the culprit. As a defense, hopefully, against further damage, I have sprayed the entire tree, including both sides of the leaves, and drenched the soil around it with a broad sprectrum systemic insecticide.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any information would be appreciated!

TIA
