Life Span of a Hosta
Comments (9)I put hostas in my garden starting 17 years ago, and they are almost all still there, bigger each year. I never expected the beds to fill up with no empty space left, but they have. Over the years I've divided almost every plant I've acquired, because I usually want LOTS of similar hostas planted next to each other in massed plantings. I carefully shape those masses of foliage. Their shapes determine the garden design, and that design is of great importance because it determines the look of the garden as a whole. Collecting new hostas every year, small ones, one of each, just hasn't done it for me. I haven't needed to acquire that many different cultivars in order to make the garden look the way I want it to. Instead, I've bought 3 or 5 of whatever cultivar I've chosen, and I've chosen it carefully based on the color its foliage will yield when it is mature and its multiples fill a big space. Then I divide the ones I buy so I end up with even more before planting the bunch as a unit. The one unfortunate thing my incessant dividing has caused is that I don't have a huge undisturbed plant that's been getting bigger and bigger and more mature for over a decade. At this point my garden is full, so there's no reason to divide any more. Maybe one day I'll have huge Sum and Substances that have reached terminal size. I'd like that. Very, very few have died over the years, and very few have gotten smaller. When they did it was because of crown rot which came into my garden one season and stayed a couple of years until I figured out how to eliminate it. Some have formed fairy rings as they've increased in diameter, and I don't bother to mess with them. Once the leaves are up, the empty spot in the middle doesn't show. The ones that haven't increased in diameter are the Regal Splendors (which shrank), the Dream Queens, and the August Moons. I keep them and nurture them nevertheless, always hoping for glory. My Sugar Daddys had a problem with their white rims splitting and going brown early in the summer. They looked so ugly for so many years that I threw them out. It was hard to do that. I had one Francis Williams that behaved the same and I threw it out too. Both of those were sad days as the leaves were stunningly beautiful. Given this experience, my belief now is that hostas live forever unless disturbed by disease, predators, or disappointed gardeners....See MoreLife Span of Dishwasher
Comments (9)My DishDrawer is 12 years old. Three months ago, replaced cracked drain hoses ($80), upper drawer LCD board with dead backlight ($58) which was only for aesthetics (it doesn't prevent the drawer from running), and $249 for an update kit of four lid motors (improved design) and revised hose supports (metal swing arms instead of plastic rods), and a mains/floodsensor board (nothing was wrong with the original but a new one was included in the kit). Hopefully is good-to-go for another 12+ years....See MoreLife Span of Terracotta type septic system?
Comments (3)Thanks Klem1, our laundry grey water system is not connected to the septic lines so no problem there. And normal water use does not cause problems as the septic system works perfectly 95% of the time with the exception of prolonged very heavy rainfall such as 2" one day then again 2" the next day (twice/year on average now). This system has a distribution box with 6 leach lines extending about 75' each. As for trees, there are 2 Paper Mulberry trees that have notorious root systems that have surely disrupted at least 2 of the leach lines and that's no help for sure. This spring once things are dryer I will consult a specialist for pricing the replacing at least the 2 lines nearest the trees. The ground over the leach field is high ground and doesn't puddle water thankfully. The only reason the lower toilet burps when the upper toilet is flushed is because the lower toilet is vented with a studer vent which allows air intake but does not let air out (unlike a roof vent which does both). If the lower toilet was vented thru the roof it would not burp and I wouldn't know that waste water could be backing up into the line from the house until it was too late. I hope that makes sense, ha....See MoreGFCI Life Span in Kitchen Outlet
Comments (2)Circuit breakers seldom fail, and a defect in one would be very unlikely to cause a GFI to trip. However, they sometimes nuisance-trip because of small momentary asymmetrical surges induced in the wiring, sometimes even those caused by appliances not directly connected to the GFI. Replacing the GFI may help, or it may not. But since it's 15 years old, it's probably not a bad idea to change it regardless. If you want a pro to replace it, you should probably check with him or her first about installing a device that you supply. Some will want to sell you the part, not just so they get the markup, but also because they're more familiar with the products they use daily....See Moregrinder12000
