Life Span of Terracotta type septic system?

vgkg Z-7 Va

Hi There, our old spetic system works well most all of the time but when heavy rains occur non stop over several days (4-5") the lower level toilet will burp air when the upstairs toilet is flushed. This tells me that the leech field is probably over loaded and possibly backs up water into the tank which covers the effluent pipe? After a few days of dry weather and frugle water use the toilet stops burping and everything returns to normal. Is this a sign of a failing system or is normal due to the very heavy rainfall?

Thanks for any feedback, and if there is an upper age to septic systems before they have to be replaced? We bought this old home 12 years ago but the rains have been awful the past couple of years, way above normal at times. I suspect this septic system was installed in the 1960's but not really certain and we do have it pumped every 5 years. The laundry is on it's own grey water tank.
