Pink Antique Rose - trying to identify

I have a pink bush antique rose. It blooms once a year and grows about 4-5 feet tall. The buds are classic 'sweetheart' rose shape opening to a cup-shaped bloom with very tight center. The stems are covered with very sharp thorns. It spreads prolifically with underground stems. Can anyone identify it?

Just a wild guess since I know little about once-bloomers, but the foliage has a bluish cast like an alba and the blooms look a bit like Koenigin von Daenemark. I thought it must be a gallica when you mentioned the suckering until I saw the foliage. Hopefully someone who actually knows these kinds of roses will answer.

Vap, you will love Thomas Affleck! I just found some photos from 2012 - not my best ones, but will go thru my camera later and post as I find some. I have gotten lazy now - its a 3 hour drive, and if I want some ARE roses, I will wait til they have free shipping, but like last nite - I wanted to get a few before their prices changed Feb. 1 so I ordered Sweet Pea, Beverly, F.J. Lindheimer and Nacogcoches [I live 30 minutes from there - and remember seeing this rose and a huge pink growing under that big shed at this old run down motel. I would stop alot and try to identify these roses. I think the big pink was Queen Elizabeth. The yellow, which turned into Nacogdoches, I couldnt figure out unless it was Sunbright, a rose that stays dark yellow].

Hi everyone. I wanted to report back on my mystery rose. I've been so busy with a major renovation that I've been neglecting my daily visits reading your wonderful posts. I've also been neglecting my garden. So many fall clean up chores on the horizon. I doubt bulbs will even get planted this year... I have a small order on the way from Chamblees. It was a total impulse. What was I thinking? My house is a construction zone. And I'm in for some major surgery in the coming months. When will I dote on baby roses? Anyway, I tracked down the owner of this lovely lady and he insists it is a New Dawn. He says it is grafted and came from Canada. It sure looks mannerly... and I know she is not usually... so I might just heed the advice given above and think longer and harder about adding a New Dawn to my collection. Oh but what a beautiful flower.

Perhaps this would be more technically a reversion to Dick Koster since it was the sport parent-but it could be a new sport since Dick is a sport of something-well I think it goes back 3 or 4 generations of sports to TausendshÃ¶ne. Polyanthas are famous for sporting but are seldom stable. How very fun that you got one to stick. I had Dick for awhile and it was very cherry syrup pink. It is like showing me two dresses and ask me which I like ? I like both and since I can't pick one most likely I will get both. Look at both the roses.. different styles, different cut ( bloom) , different colour and most likely different scent. SoFl, I feel as if I am getting into the same boat. I have room but it is matter of time that I will door be out of space. My husband is already asking me. 40 is not enough..Geezs, Jin. I want French roses, possibly a few Islanders, Antique ( mostly ) and also DA ( mostly ). Any perfumes made of roses like Nahema is on my want list. Then , I want big blooms which are big roses. I have a long , long lists lastly climbing roses which I also have a list. Trying to cut half my list by is not working :( Cori Ann, you are killing me too....your roses are beautiful. Oh no! I just ordered this rose after falling in love with it and hearing such rave reviews.

Being a newbie, I hope I haven't taken on too much. What do you do with a problem such as this?

It is a great rose and recommended for a beginner because it seems to resist disease and pests better than most. In my experience the flowers have all gone by the time the bugs show up. My new one has taken awhile to get going and I hope it bushes out next year. After two seasons it is about 2 feet tall. I am hopeing for a graceful bush of about 4ft tall by 3ft wide. In my climate it may get bigger.

GG, are you asking what to do with suckers? In this case they are some distance from the main plant and easy to deal with. Just drive a shovel on the plant side of the sucker, cutting the connecting root, and lift the sucker.

Which then gives you a new rose, a thing not to be despised. I've never had much luck trying to root 'Koenigin von Daenemark', and look forward to my plants' beginning to sucker. A lot of people lust after this rose, and with reason, so if your rose begins to sucker you can awaken a lot of gratitude by giving starts of it to other gardeners.

Thank You for responding to my question as to what to do if mine should start suckering, (that's what I was asking).
I haven't dealt with that yet on any rose, but I have had it happen to some viburnum and crabapple trees, which is quite annoying.
Now I'll know what to do and will try to root it to give away. : )
