Pioneer Roses from Antique Rose Emporium
Comments (44)Vap, you will love Thomas Affleck! I just found some photos from 2012 - not my best ones, but will go thru my camera later and post as I find some. I have gotten lazy now - its a 3 hour drive, and if I want some ARE roses, I will wait til they have free shipping, but like last nite - I wanted to get a few before their prices changed Feb. 1 so I ordered Sweet Pea, Beverly, F.J. Lindheimer and Nacogcoches [I live 30 minutes from there - and remember seeing this rose and a huge pink growing under that big shed at this old run down motel. I would stop alot and try to identify these roses. I think the big pink was Queen Elizabeth. The yellow, which turned into Nacogdoches, I couldnt figure out unless it was Sunbright, a rose that stays dark yellow]....See MoreChamblee's vs. Antique Rose Emporium
Comments (29)I've only ordered from Chamblee's out of the two, and have nothing but good things to say about them--for multiple purchases (which is how I usually order), they're a good value, and their plants catch up pretty quickly to the roses I buy at nurseries/big box. ARE might be a good way to go if you only wanted to buy one or two, though--they have a neat website and lots of good stuff. I must say, your Icebergs look wonderful--not sure how you kept them that way in NJ, I'm in less-humid Nebraska, and mine were either blackspotty or naked of leaves, and I'm not consistent enough with spraying to overcome a bad tendency for disease. They were some of my first roses to meet Mr. Shovel, which I hated to do, because they are blooming fools....See Moreantique rose emporium
Comments (5)I agree. In fact, I'd say ARE's roses are at least as nice as Chamblees. And, in my experience, they have always been larger plants, of course, for a little more money. I buy from both places, both mail-order and in person at their home operations. Both places are top notch and offer excellent value for the product you get. ARE is special for me because of the operation that they run there. One trip to visit ARE deep in the heart of Texas and you immediately realize it's much, much more than an ordinary business. They actually show you how a cottage garden should look, with roses, perennials, shrubs, and ornamental trees in a natural surrounding. After my first visit there, I never thought of a "rose garden" the same way again. Now it's a garden, that happens to have garden-worthy roses growing in it. I don't know anything about bare-root roses ... I always buy own-root container roses. Randy...See MoreAntique Rose emporium free shipping
Comments (50)Michluvroses, I am late to this discussion, but my favorite fragrant, repeating, climbing rose is Cl. Clotilde Soupert. This is a very old pic of it. I grew this one from a cutting. It was climbing over a garden shed. Now, I love exuberance! It might seem unwieldy to some people, but my favorite roses are ones that grow with total abandon. ;)...See MoreCori Ann - H0uzz violated my privacy
