Just wanted to mention that for me, 'Mrs. John Laing' doesn't need pegging the way the majority of hybrid perpetuals do to maximize bloom potential. I have two bushes of MJL and keep them pruned somewhat like a floribunda and this rose blooms just fine as an upright bush. I agree with you that some of the HP can be stingy bloomers. In fact, for me most of the ones I grow I consider mainly once-bloomers with the rare and highly unpredictable scattered fall blooms. But I have to say that in my climate, good rebloom is a rare commodity due to my short growing season and I may be more forgiving than others. Celeste

Robert - If you're looking for another MIP type climbing Bourbon I would highly recommend Mme de Sevigne (mine's from Ashdown but I do not see it listed as available this season). Even though she's been cut back constantly she was over 12 feet tall at the end of her third year. I grow her trained to a pyramid trellis, on the left in this photo in Spring 07: Good rebloom, excellent fragrance. My experience with both Variegata di Bologna and Honorine de Brabant (which is essentially a once bloomer in my garden) is that they are better grown fanned out horizontally rather than more vertically - that way the spring flush is maximized because they will bloom all along the canes. Louise Odier is one of the easiest roses to train - she reblooms, blooms on old and new wood, and can be grown either horizontally or vertically. I grow 3 Coquette des Blanches, trained together on a wide tripod - I find it bushy rather than leggy so I'm not sure it would make a good climber. Gregg and Phillip at Vintage believe Edith de Murat is really Mme Cornellison, which is a sport of Souv de la Malmaison, so petite by definition. Good luck George

Bourbons. Such divas! They love our gardens and fulfill our wildest Victorian dreams or they tease us with slow progress and stingy blooms until the very last of our patience is burned out and then finally build up enough presence to erupt into the grandest show in the garden or they sulk while offering just enough meager crumbs of sumptuous and deeply fragrant beauty to keep us hooked and stay our shovels or they simply succumb to blackspot or harsh winters and turn up their prissy little toes after a few years. When they love us and our gardens, they get bigger and better every year and toss around cascades of blooms like those Krista receives for her tender care. I grow all three, Mrs. John Laing is new to my garden this spring, so I'm not sure about its growth habit.

I suspect that Reine Victoria and Louise Odier could get large in your zone.

Mrs. John Laing might be more compact, but in your zone, I'm not sure...

Hopefully some folks from your area will chime in.

I have Louise next to mine. It has a big (OK huge) footprint although It did have major dieback this year with our late frost.

Mrs J.L. punches out some beautiful blooms and it is hard to pass on, although it is subject to BS.

The waaaabits have a major love affair with La Reine despite cages within cages.

I do not know, they are all good choices, perhaps different in your zone as has been mentioned. Have fun!

Salet is a moss rose, but one of the very few that repeats. You should get at least a second flush from it once it's established. I'm not sure how mildew resistant it is, although the one I have doesn't suffer from that. (Powdery mildew isn't usually a big rose problem where I live, so it's difficult for me to evaluate Salet's resistance.)
