Composting in winter

I am just getting started with some large flower beds in my back yard. All i've done so far is turned the soil a bit, removed a lot of roots and brought in some decomposed horse manure (with saw dust).

My question is, once the leaves have fallen i'd like to compost them with some greens of course over the winter. will this work? I am thinking i can just shred the leaves, grass clippings, etc and put them in the flower beds and by the time spring rolls around the beds will be all ready to go (i.e composted).

Is this correct? Will it work?
