You won't be happy to hear that my Eden blooomed the first year I owned it. However, I wouldn't give up if I were you. Climbers often take 3 years (or more) to get well enough established, so it may still flourish for you. If I understand you correctly, yours has only been in the ground one year--not a long time to get the roots established. Another year or two could make all the difference--and when it blooms, you will forgive it anything.

The other possibility that occurs to me has to do with your zone. Some posters have complained that their Edens only bloom once in the spring. If you had a late freeze like the big Easter Freeze we had in Kansas, it may have damaged the buds and that is why you got no blooms.

My Eden has had two bloom cycles each year. Next year will be its third year in my garden, so I'm expecting an even more spectacular show.

Trust me. Eden does nothing for two years. Well, my own root bloomed the first year in a pot, but I bet if it were in the ground, laying down roots, it would have done nothing. Patience.

I am on my second Eden, the first of which was on Dr. Huey and I had five blooms in five years. That one is gone and I got one from RU that bloomed well the second year and so far has good repeat whereas the other one was lucky to get a bloom per year. I think like Teasing Georgia, Eden has good clones out there and bad ones and I got a bad one the first time, because 5-6 years in the ground is long enough. That one is gone, gone, gone and I had more blooms in the first six months with the one from RU than I had in 5+ years with the J&P version.

I owned 4 own root edens. I had this glorious picture in my mind of the covering a copper arbor that I built. In 3 years - yes 3 year, each slender stalk was BARELY taller than me.. 5'6''. I yanked them out.

Later I bought a grafted one, but refused to give it a spot on an arbor. It is growing nicely as a large large flowing flowering bush.

I wonder if grafted vs own root makes a difference with this rose?

My own root roses were from Heirloom which were supposed to be virus free.. so that shouldn't have been an issue.

well. Wait and see for next year. It is a beautiful rose,
healthy & carefree.
mine is grafted also-Marleah made a good point-I have had
'hardy' own roots that did much better grafted. But since
she is putting out such nice new growth, I'd leave her
alone, and wave that shovel around!

I have one Eden in a spot that does not get the greatest sun. She takes about 4 years to bloom well in my estimation. Mine is about 4 years old and only about 6 feet tall, but this year is full of blooms. Mine is having some problems fully opening, but maybe that too will change in time. As she gets taller she will get tons of sun.

My Eden is not even a year old and it's about 6 ft. tall already and flowering like there's no tomorrow. I got mine from Roses Unlimited.

I give her a lot of organic fertilizer, every month. I also put in about handful of super phosphate in early spring.

Eden and I (and the shovel) had a little chat today, about how the power of life and death are in the shovel and how roses that don't make Mommy happy don't get to stay in the garden. I went on about the scary critters that will come to poop on her and chew on her canes in the city dump and how there are hundreds of roses that could take her place. I ended it by telling her that she's got one more year to do something besides grow, then her butt is toast.

Don't know if it worked, but my neighbor on the other side of the fence got a kick out of it (ugh).

In the meantime, I'll keep waving that shovel! msjam2, what kind of fertilizer do you use? Maybe I should try some of that instead of the Rose Tone...

I make my own fertilizer, I combine equal amounts of cottonseed meal, alfalfa meal and milorganite. Sometimes, if and when I have some, I'll add some soybean meal as well.

Of course, I give them alfalfa tea as well. :)

I got mine from Heirloom. It didn't grow much for about three years. It did bloom a little by the second or third year, I forget which now. I must say that while it started out blooming mostly just in the spring, it now has three or four very good bloom cycles. Several others have reported a similar pattern. It might be climate-specific. I haven't paid attention.

I grow mine as a biggish shrub, which suits the site and the rose both quite well.

I have to respectfully disagree w/ what's been posted so far. It seems that, for some reason, certain rose *plants* (not varieties) just do not produce flowers, but why this is, I don't know. I have a beautiful 2nd-year 'Variegata di Bologna' outside which is healthy, growing...but not a single flower. Meanwhile, a one-year-old 'Mme Isaac Pereire' -- a bourbon, like 'Variegata' -- gave flowers all thru June. And even a cutting of 'Lily Pons' that I rooted last Sept., from a friend's garden, put out a bloom this year! So it isn't the age of the plant that counts.

A friend of mine has this same problem with a large, beautiful 'Sterling Silver' -- it just isn't producing any flowers. I personally tended his rose garden in May, and all the other plants bloomed beautifuly.

A rose-grower and nursery owner I know says that it sometimes happens that certain plants just do not produce flowers. She deals in own-root roses, and says that if you root a rose off a cutting without a flower, the resultant plant won't bloom -- which sounds like an [non-PC language warning] old wive's tale, and wouldn't apply to grafted plants anyway. But the fact remains that these roses aren't blooming, for whatever reason. It's an anomaly, but it is real.

I'm going to ask for a replacement 'Variegata.' I suggest you do the same. 'New Dawn' is a huge bloomer, you should have at least seen a few flowers by now.

I am in the same zone. Perhaps you are not in the land of frozen mud or dust, but this has been my sad experience.

The last two years it has bloomed it's head off. I took my advice and tied these big 5lb wrabbits on the end of the canes to try and train them and they just waived around in the breeze, especially after they desiccated a bit.

Last fall the roots were so huge, the 4 tined garden fork was bending at wierd angles. I was also super lazy and just wrapped with burlap instead of tipping the rose like normal. Well it died to the groundline. We also had a late killer frost. It has sent up these 8-9 foot canes but no shock & awe blooms yet. Bummer, perhaps next year.

I guess I hate to see people shovel prune roses before giving them a chance. I try to encourage people to wait a few years before shovel pruning, especially in zones 4 and 5. In my garden Meg, Eden, and Louise Odier all took several years to bloom. I have the same experience with clematis.

I have a 3rd year Eden climber here. First I have to say its blooms melt my heart and make up for its diva-esque behavior. They are really that beautiful. Mine bloomed a bit the first year more the next and had a good flush this year. It has never repeated though and I am thinking maybe it never will. I am trying to make my peace with this. Another thing is that it is not really climbing more than 9 feet. The flowers also ball when it rains, not my favorite outcome. I blame my nearby peonys which attract downpours when they bloom at the same time. For me Eden is a rose that I will love as long as it has one really nice bloom per year.
