1 year seedlings with flower buds

I've got several seedlings that I planted 1 year and 3-4 months ago from seed that have flower buds already. Growing them inside under grow lights in the winter, and putting them outside during the summer, has sure helped. I'll post pictures when they are in bloom.

Congrats! That sure is an accomplishment. You must feel really proud. I can't wait to see the pictures. I have seedlings of Kona hybrid that are maybe 2 inches high that I grew from seed end of July beginning of August.

Wow! That's amazingly fast for a plumie from seed to flower. Even using grow lights over the winter the fastest I've had a seed grown plant develop an inflo is a bit over 3 years.

I hope you all have a wonderful New Year too! I am also counting down the days now til spring. For some reason, spring always seems so much closer once January gets here. We have had a reallllly mild winter so far. The other day I was actually running around outside without a coat. It was great, but I'm sure we'll pay for it soon. I'm looking forward to one big snowfall, then I'm ready for spring. I just want my daughter to have the chance to go out and play in the snow for the first time. :) I don't usually winter sow. I did a last year and had some success, but this year I don't think I will. I'm just not very good at it. I either forget to water or water too much. And my seedlings just never do that well. How do I tell where next year's flower buds are set on my ES?

Hi Ostrich - I was wondering similarly, but on my old Nikko rather than ES. I've been observing closely as she behaved quite strangely, this season (despite a much better over-wintering & canes survival). Just today I found those little fat buds (at the nodes/petiole joints) very likely, our overnite temps dropping to 50s-upper 40s & lower temps lingering through noon, must have summoned them! Glyn Church's chapter 9 covers thoroughly the subject of pruning - when & how (diagrams included) even distinguishes between the fat buds which holds the 'flower heads' & the smaller 'growth buds'. Your ??? will be answered to satisfaction, plus more! I recently purchased Glyn's book for a gift & read through/took notes on pruning. Dirr's chapt.12 on pruning is not as detailed. You might want to get your hands on this book. Amazon has the more recent edition - I'm sure & should include pruning chapter as well. BTW Glyn says to prune in Winter or Spring - I guess if you do now those buds might just decide to emerge! Good luck!

Those warm temps and dry air are really encouraging the mites -- but they're encouraging flowers too! I have some plumerias under lights in the basement, and several are still blooming. I thought that by keeping the lights at under 11 hours they wouldn't bloom, but they are anyway. I'd rather they bloom in the summer. Perhaps the warmth (about 75 degrees) in combination with lights and no cool-down at night are keeping them blooming? Any ideas on how I can discourage blooming? I can't cool the room any more than it is. Do you think I should reduce the light period even more? What's frustrating is I have a seedling that has its FIRST INFLOS -- FOUR of them! And I know they're just not going to bloom well.

Thanks Laura, apparently you are a yellow person too! :0) Thanks Nancy and Nan. #6 is a great seedling. It's really much prettier than this photo. I think it's lacking in stature. Just one more cross! :0) Nan, #1 is the cleanest pink I have seen and a really nice plant. Trying to give the flower a little more volume to complete it. Thanks Krystal. Congrats! What rating bulb did you use? I've been experimenting with indoor grow lights and nothing has shown much promise.

Thanks everyone. My lights are the T5 high output florescent lights. They are all 54 watt. One half are 3000K. The other half are 6500K. If I can keep ahead of the spider mites (I'm starting to use a neem oil based miticide), I should see some inflos. bloom in about a month.
