First Year Rose Pics

New member LONG time reader.I started out looking for varieties i could try in my zone 5 "garden" on the Internet and came across garden web about three years ago.Last year i ordered bare roots from three sources quite late in the year.

I ordered from J&P-Close out sale,Jungs-Close Out Sale and Pickering three plants from ea.Also picked up some very cheap $2-4.oo bare roots from BIG Lots & Aldi in March.All Hybrid teas and a few climbers.Lost several over last summer and winter.I do have a few impressive plants from the discount store finds.

This year I Got 18 plants mostly OGR,Austins and a few shrubs from Pickering with money saved all winter.Plants come in with smaller canes than what i got from J&P and Jungs but have way more of them and the plants grow fast and bushy.

With Info from the forum I plant all bud unions 4-6 inches deep and mounded some soil for the winter.The only plants i lost over the winter were small discount hybrid teas.

I don't spray and do have lots of what i guess are rose slug damage on some varieties.Lots of weeds also.No budget for mulch yet.

Lovely roses. You may wish to post further pictures of your roses on the dedicated Rose Gallery forum. That's where most of us go to see pictures of a general sort and/or to do a search for a picture of a specific variety... Glad you are having so much luck growing your beauties...Maryl

rainbowrose, Thanks for posting pics of your lovely roses. I've noticed that many post their rose pictures HERE, everyone enjoys seeing them. I might post a few of my pictures, if I figure out how to. My 3rd year Reinne de Violet is climbing up a porch railing in full bloom. It bloomed last year also. I do no winter protection. The 'Impressionist' is also starting to bloom. Have several minatures. Waiting to be planted are 'April Moon' and 'Midnight Blue', have them in containers now, new this year. Waiting to get a plum tree thinned out 1st so more sun can hit the area. Thanks again for the pictures....

Awww....thanks everyone for the kind comments. I'm continuing to read about how to care for the roses on this board and actually recording what I need to do on my outlook calendar so that I will always know what to do every year. lol Kate, I love Salsa too....I tend to lean toward pink roses, but it's so nice to break it up with a splash of red. Thanks, Socks....I do believe I am addicted now. Hehehe Greenhaven, yes that's my hand under the C.M. I took very close up pics so that I could capture every nuance of the flower, so it may look larger than it actually is. I have the roses scattered all over the yard, I have about an acre, so that means I....ahem....have enough room for more. lol Hoovb, thanks....I think that I pruned my roses a bit too severely last February, especially the T.S. because it's growing very slowly.....I will definitely try to learn to prune so that my roses will look FULLER next year....with the exception of the Nearly Wild rose, all of the other roses are fairly small....and I may just be rushing things...they are less than a year old! Oh, the strange thing about the Tuscan rose is that it looks like the pic for about a week or more then it turns PINK!! Wonder why? Rose, thanks! I had been reading that alfalfa tea was good for roses, sounded strange to me at the time, but I thought I'd give it a try because I treasure the advice that is offered here. I was even happier when someone said just place the alfalfa pellets around the base of the rose...I truly believe that is what made the bloom and the foliage look so beautiful. The Red Spotted Purples mimic the Pipevine Swallowtails with the bluish coloration and the red spots beneath, because the swallowtails supposedly have an unpleasant taste -- I never tried one. I see an occasional Red Spotted, never when I have a camera in my hand. They are interesting because you almost never see them on a flower, usually on something disgusting and dirty like the dog's bed. Tuesday when I was out in the heat and humidity, none of my butterfly pics were worth saving, except for a very few of a Zebra Swallowtail with his long tails. Nobody would sit still, LOL. I don't know why I bother, they look no different to the dozens from previous years. One thing I noticed when I was out, that there are more butterflies close to the house than at the patch of woods farther away where upright lantana grows wild and there is also passionvines. Maybe it was the time of day -- 4 pm, and the terrible heat. I was expecting swarms. We should all see increases in the number of butterflies, later this month and next. I knew there was a reason I love this forum! I am reminded of it often when reading these posts from all of you. What sweet gardening friends you are! Thank-you for your anniv. wishes. I agree it was a most perfect gift on our special day. I can relate SO well to those of you that are growing roses for the first time. I was in EXACTLY those shoes last year. I bought four bare-root David Austins from Wayside and only ONE of them took! sniff! You wouldn't believe what my dh and I went through to create the bed for them if I told you so suffice it to say that I had four roses, three of them dead and he declared we MUST have something to fill those empty holes so we went to the local garden center and splurged on two KO blush bushes. Already established and blooming. That was one of the best purchases ever in my opinion. They are double the size and covered with buds this year. I got another one for Mom's day! hehe The rose in question in the picture is a New Dawn climber. I bought two of those last year in POTS. They were tiny but they were already alive and growing. They have gone bonkers this year and are already nearly up to the roof of my patio. They are also covered with buds. I am SO impatient to see them all in full bloom!! Of all the plants in my garden, nothing ever thrills me as much as my roses when they are blooming.

Cnetter, I didn't know primrose bloomed so early. I was thinking about getting one of the yellow ones, but then I read somewhere that they are a rapid spreader. Which one do you have, and is it hard to control? Last fall I received some free tulip bulbs with an online order, but I've never planted bulbs before and wasn't sure if I did it right. Today I noticed some of them poking through the mulch, which was exciting, but for some reason a lot more of them are up on one side of the walkway than the other. I'm hoping they are just a few days behind, and not rotted underground. Sorry if I bore you guys with my garden pictures. My DH teases me for taking more pictures of the flowers than I do our children, LOL! In my defense, the flowers are much more cooperative for the camera.

Iris: There is a simple reason the Rose Gallery was opened for pictures. If everyone posted pictures on this forum, which is dedicated to discussion not pictures, their quest for help might get lost in the simple rotation of postings. This was not a "Rule" put out by some authoritarian tyrant, rather a request from the members who saw what happened when everyone decided to post their blooms at the expense of requests for help. Certainly you can post a picture here if it is part of the thread (IE: What red roses do you like?), but if you just want to show everyone your Mr. Lincoln or whatever, the gallery is the place designated for such things. It is a simple matter of courtesy to those that need help....Maryl

Jeff, I rarely buy mulch but use whatever I have on hand. When trees drop their leaves they get put in the garden as mulch. When I deadhead the roses and other flowers they get spread around the plant. When I do weeding I cut those up too and tuck them under bushy plants. Even when I prune I cut up the upper, less thorny parts and spread them around the plants. Needless to see, I don't go barefoot in those areas! Over time, I've managed to build up nice layers of mulch which break down and nourish the soil more than the stuff you buy because it's really more like compost. These things are all renewable sources and I've noticed that since I've started doing that my plants look better and seem to bloom more.

Your roses are beautiful and I love, love the color of John Cabot. Even though I don't care for red roses your Blaze goes so well with the color of the wood behind it. Perfect combination!

I'm so sorry that you were made to feel badly. As far as I'm concerned, posting pictures of the first year of your roses IS a topic of general interest. I remember when I did that a few years ago on the Antique Rose Forum when I first joined, and everyone graciously shared my pride and sense of excitement. It's wonderful to have new people join the forum, and I don't think anyone meant consciously to dampen your enthusiasm. I sincerely hope you'll stay on and continue to share your roses and garden with us. To me that's one of the most enjoyable parts of being on the forum, to see gardens and gardeners develop and grow. Please give us another chance.

Lovely to see these photos. I am new to zone 5 after living in southern California and it only recently came to my attention that growing climbing roses poses certain challenges here! Oh my, yes I have soo much to learn & experience--from frozen socks in the garage to spigots with turn off valves 18 inches deep!

I appreciate seeing your climbers and I also appreciate learning about the gallery rose section.
