They're aphids. You can wash them off with a spray of water.

Definitely aphids. Putting a few drops of blue dish soap in a spray bottle filled with water, and spraying the aphids can help clear them up. For really bad infestations, you can get a systemic fertilizer that will kill them, but it can be slow to work.

To keep aphids away from roses, you can try some companion planting. Basil, chives, garlic, onion, lavender, marigolds, petunias, nasturtiums, and mint are a few plants that will help repel aphids.

If you can stand it, remove and crush the beetles. They leave a trail for other beetles to visit so you should look in the same places for infestation. You could carry a container with soapy water and place them in that. I've found that the catbirds and other birds eat the beetles I've crushed and left on the ground. The beetles particularly like certain plants. If those plants are grown in afternoon sun, they will attract more beetles than those growing in a shady site in afternoon when beetles are the most active. Roses, azaleas, crape myrtle, Oenothera, Gaura and some Clematis attract them here.

Pollen beetles are benign but (a) unsightly and (b) they certainly have harmed my roses. The blooms did not come out properly and wilted straight away. Not what you want of a patio rose! if they go for the pollen what effect does this have on bees? (I'm not a biologist)

Hadley, I think we've ruled out an insect, I'm linking a photo of a bristly bud (bud blast, disease)...and without seeing yours, my vote still goes with the solid freezing weather that took place the last week of February after the preceding mild weather. I purchased this beautiful majesty palm from Wal-Mart.I t was shipped from Florida, im in Massachusetts. I just fell in love with it. Three weeks later I've come to find that there's a variety of bugs in the soil!!!! I found a dead centipede, live snails, a millipede and who knows what else is in there. I researched the plant after getting it and I read that this plant is an attraction to mealy bugs and spider mites but I have yet to see those. I have four lovely and thriving plants of my own purchased from grocery stores and I've never had this problem, ever. I'm thinking of washing the plant in soap and water and maybe some insecticide and repotting it this weekend. Should I do this or just get rid of it? Any suggestions? I love this plant.

Almost everyone has aphids on the roses every spring. Ordinarily they do little or no harm at denser concentrations than your pictures show. If you have only a few roses, the easiest thing to do is just wipe off any thick encrustations. Unless you are an exhibitor who can't tolerate the slightest cosmetic damage, there's never any need for anything stronger than soap, if that. My aphids are disappearing in June as they always do, but I still have some shoots that have more than your picture shows. It's not enough to bother about.
