These do eat plants when their numbers are high. They do. There should be no debating this. If anyone doesn't believe it, they haven't had an infestation of pill bugs and don't really have the experience to help someone regarding. I cannot grow legume or peas without killing these bugs in the area or they will take down every one of the healthy seedlings. I drench the soil in the area with liquid spinosad. Once the plant is established, it's good. I gotta eat, too. I read somewhere that pill bugs remove metals and is likely to remove some toxins in the soil. I'm still trying to figure why I have so many and what purpose they are serving beyond the normal "eat decaying matter".

I decided to look up thrips in my book about greenhouse pests and beneficials. It seems they reproduce both sexually and asexually. There are 5 instar stages, egg,2 larva stages, prepupal, pupal and adult. The hotter the temperatures, the faster they go from egg to adult. Apparently thrips are really attracted to blue so some greenhouse growers hang blue sticky cards. I was wondering if you could paint stakes blue, smear with vaseline and catch them that way? The blue stakes might not look to bad with daylilies either. Think that would work? I read on the robin that one lady plants white allyssum to attract beneficials that eat the thrips. She says it worked for her. 'The most beneficial spray they have that shows promise is Metarhizium anisopliae, an entomopathogenic fungi. When the spores land on the thrips, they break through to the inside using enzymes and mechanical force. The insect dies within a few days.' Marg

I mix 10% alchohol with water in a spray bottle and when I spray my citrus plants. They get a small light dose just-in-case. Just noticed some on one of my small fig trees and I clipped a few leaves off and sprayed a nice and medium dose ( 30% alchohol ) and will repeat in a couple of days. I sent them on thier way with a good dab with a Q-tip dipped in alchohol directly onto the bug. Burns them dead on the spot. That will teach them a lesson! The bug travels from plant to plant mostly if you have two or more plants cross branching/touching each other. You might also purchase Safer garden safe insect soap. This stuff works well for me. I’d say the larvae sounds like fungus gnat larvae so does the worm type things the larvae can range from clear to brownish and, it’s most likely if it is fungus gnats due to the dead nerve plant or overwatering or both add 3 percent hydrogen peroxide to your soap water mix (1 part peroxide to 4 parts water) spray the soil for 7 days or water your plants with it as a flush for the larvae get neem oil for the adult gnats if you start seeing them it also kills many other house plant pests and make sure it’s safe for your plants in particular.
