Looks Rugosa to me...
My first guess is Therese Bugnet
Reminds me of Hansa and or Purple Pavement, but appears to be a little too light in color

The flower looks a lot like Therese Bugnet, but the leaves do not. I was wondering about a hybrid rugosa with a lot of non-rugosa in it?

i think they may have been sprayed with wiltpruf for
the spider mites. here are leaves from below that.
(although, new foliage does have a sheen.)

yes, the blooms do look similar, but the buds are very
different.
i guess it could be a rugosa hybrid, i really have no
idea!

The leafs do not look rugosa to me, more in common with gallicas and automn damasks. The shiny leafs may be from rugosa genes but I would think it is more likely some other rose. Just speculating it could be from a china varity, eglanteria...

Does it have repeat bloom? How is the fragrance? Damascenner like / Portland? More like gallica officinalis?

It is a fine rose. Have you been looking in gardens near by? Often these type of roses have wandered as a sucker from a garden owner to the next.

i'm not sure about repeat bloom, this is the first bloom
i've seen on it. it is very fragrant, but i don't know how
to describe it. yes, i did look around but don't see any sign
of any similar roses.

lots of roses I don't see on US sites. She has a 'found'
rambler that looks very similar to my 'found' rambler.

Definitely NOT Therese Bugnet. Leaves and cane color are not right, and Therese's bloom form is different. I would also vote against much rugosa influence...leaves are not right for rugosa.

Looks similar to R. gallica officinalis, except bloom form is not quite the same. But you say this is an immature sucker so perhaps we're not seeing a representative bloom. Gallicas are known for suckering and traveling around quite a bit.

Unfortunately, there is a possibility it could be a sucker off an open pollenated seedling of a gallica or damask. I've seen OP gallica seedlings at cnetter's place here in Denver, and they can be all over the place in terms of bloom form and plant structure.

You mention "rambler" - is it throwing out long, supple canes, or just suckering underground? A true rambler would be throwing out long, supple canes. Gallicas (and other roses) move around by sending out underground suckers.

Do you have a photo of an unopened bud?

No the rambler is a different rose I have that is similar
to a rose on Christine Mielle's website.

You can see the tiny glands on it-they had a scent if you rubbed them-not sure what kind of scent, smelled like trees...

I don't know what it is, but I agree that it is definitely not Theresa Bugnet.

I was just hoping maybe someone had some ideas...looks like
it is developing a good sized hip. glands on the pedicles
still have a 'woodsy' smell.

Alida before I read the other persons post I thought Marbree ... so tonight I went and photograph mine which is in bloom, the leaves do not look like "typical" Portland leaves and you can see their very pronounced serrations and structure.

By the way the bloom mottling and sometimes "dotting/stripping"" also is indicative of mine.
