Question About Marie Van Houtte

For those of you who grow her,have you found her as prone to thrips damage as Mrs. Dudley Cross?

Is she a bush you would plant again if you were to lose her for some reason?

It sounds as though she can be a challange to prune and clean up though.

I've never known her to be troubled by thrips.
I would plant her again in a heartbeat.
Challenge to prune? Why prune her????

I don't deadhead her (old blooms self-clean) and I don't prune her. I'm barely five feet tall. She's a couple of feet up the hillside, and is anyhow a lot taller than I am, and I couldn't reach to the top if I wanted to.
I leave her alone and enjoy her.

The thrips do get on MvH here in Fl. but she isn't one of their favorites.Prepare to have a huge bush if you don't cut back.Mine is 15 feet wide[measured] and thats all the room I can give it as its on the property line.
The blooms are worth it.Color changes with the season.
I deadhead what I can reach.

I haven't grown Marie van Houtte (although I do have two Mrs. Dudley Cross and Marie has been called "Mrs. Dudley on steroids". I have two bushes of SdlM and I absolutely adore this rose. At the moment for the first time ever in about three years one of them has a bad case of mildew but even that doesn't discourage me from loving this rose. For me it blooms practically year-round and the blooms are gorgeous and the bush is nice and full, a little more wide than tall. I'd love to see pictures of your pool area after the roses have grown for a while. What a pity that so many landscapers are completely ignorant about the old roses which are fabulous for a romantic and lush garden. And, you'll have roses that probably no one else in your neighborhood has ever seen or even heard of! Ingrid

I no longer have General Gallieni (a bit too bright for my color scheme) but have the other two and think they are two of the finest tea roses. Both of mine are young and one is in too much shade (doing better now since part of a tree toppled over in the rain), but I have something to look forward to that will get better with every year. Thank you both so much. I really appreciate your time. She is about 4 or 5 years old. But when we moved last year I whacked her back and moved her to our new home in mid-July. She was around 5 and 1/2 feet tall. Since then I now know you are not supposed to do that but I did it before I found this forum(You all are great~thanks for all the info). She was kept watered every other day along with 17 others and all but one (cl. iceberg) survived. Her flowers were sometimes a darker pink like your picture Luanne. This photo from yesterday looks really pale more so than they did before I moved.(Soil differences?)(cooler weather?) Sherry, Actually the foliage is not shiny.(don't know why my pics turned out like that) Her leaves are more of a matte, kind of like Duchesse de Brabant. Well anyway this is one of my favorite roses. I'm sorry the kids didn't win, but let's hope this has brought the enormous need for funding for people with challenges to the forefront. As the grandmother of a young lady who is living with similar challenges, I realize the need for help from both public and private sources. Insurance just does not cover it all. Please keep in mind, any help you can give to anyone or any organization, be it a donation, a fundraiser or even to volunteer to help, is a wonderful thing. Thanks Jeri and Pete! Rogue Valley Roses was out of the Flamingo Garden Tea, so I am getting Marie VH instead.

I'm only 5 ft. 3 in. so this should be interesting! I'll have to keep her within 10 feet, or she'll be busting property lines here. Still, she should do just fine with a little bit of restraint.

I'm glad to hear that the thrips are not as much of a problem with Marie. They sure love Mrs. Dudley Cross. Not sure if I want to leep that one.

Sandy -- It wasn't thrips -- it was powdery AND downy mildew. Mrs. Dudly Cross just HATED it here. Marie, "buxom lass" that she is, is a MUCH healthier rose.

Yeah Pete -- You're right. If you don't cut her back, she DOES get to be pretty big. We just put her where that was OK, and let her have at it.

It sure would have been interesting to meet the lady she was named after! I wish I had the room to just let her have at it, but I don't have enough property for that. She'll have adequate room to get some size on her, but she won't be able to hog up as much as her heart desires. I have a feeling each spring she'll require a whole day of work, just on her alone!
