Comments (11)Susan, I am very familiar with black spot here since I have discarded so many many roses because of it. You are correct that it is often a regional thing. Even in Tulsa, my Marie Van Houtte did not have much problem, but the three times I have tried Mrs. Dudley Cross, the black spot has been to bad to keep it. That is opposite of most people's experience. Michael, I can mark that one off my list then, Thanks. I can accommodate a larger rose, but not that small. I am not familiar with Mother of Pearl. I looked it up on HMF, and see that it is my color. I would like it but ARE does not carry it. I looked in Roses Unlimited, and they do not have it either. I try to buy what I can from ARE since the shipping charges are so much less than on either coast. I try hard to avoid pink unless I need it since so much of my garden is pink. I am trying to find roses that will go down the slope to our creek. I have discovered that I can more easily handle roses on the slope that are small. The large roses like Penelope can suddenly have poison ivy or some other problem, and make it very difficult for me to deal with it. Comments (16)My Tuscany Superb has 6' long canes that arch over to a total height of around 4'. How big is too big? I've got so many roses that are doing well for me it would be hard to list them all. What are you looking for? Antiques and Austin roses only? Do you want some hardy shrubs, Buck roses, rugosas, etc? Some of my favorite roses right now that don't get too big (for me that's under 4') are: Shrubs & Bucks Quietness (a truly outstanding rose that you can purchase at Sam's...) Dakota's Song Prairie Harvest Winter Sunset most of the Easy Elegance roses: All the Rage Macy's Pride Grandma's Blessing Funny Face Antiques Indigo Vick's Caprice Charles de Mills (around 5') Leda "Reine des Violettes" from Sam Kedem - his is not the true RDV, I believe it is really Portland From Glendora. She is a bloom factory all summer long and highly fragrant but does get to be about 5'x5'. A must have in my garden. David Austin roses: Crocus Rose Christopher Marlowe Redoute Charlotte Eglantyne The Dark Lady Rugosas Snow pavement - new this year but very fragrant and should stay on the small side. Purple Pavement Marie Bugnet Linda Campbell - she gets about 5'x5' with massive hydrangea like clusters of blooms. An absolute showstopper in my garden. I could list many many more but I'll stop myself here.....See Moremy garden - year 2
Comments (12)Thanks all for your encouraging words. Trip the creps were planted in the summer after I moved in so 18 months old. I now realise 5 is far too many as this rose is so big and may move one or two out next winter. I go along with hedge clipeprs and lop of all the branches and flowers that stick out more than a few cm so I guess I am espaliering it but I have to do that as it is a walkway. I like that the crep hedge on the balcony flowers as well on the non-sun side - I am looking at it 4 feet away as I type in my living room. Marion - I think the reason for the success of lamarque up that gum - and now leonie viennot starting - is the frequency and quantity of water as every time someone has a bath or shower, the sprinklers turn on and there is also heaps of cow manure around the gum - I do not think it would work without that water as the gum would be a better scavenger. But having said that, the stupid one here is currently planting a new gigantea next to a massive gum on the hill above my house to replace one that died, and every morning I troop up and hand water a wedding day I have next to another gum and I am about to plant a rambling rector and a gift from a friend here that was not kifsgate - I do see these massive roses bedecking the gums on my hill and I am not really dealing with how they will cope with the gums taking all the water - but I am taking the advice of Larry from rose exchange and planting them next to the gum trunk not out further where there is likely to be more feeder roots - it is an exercise that is likely to end in tears unless one has a biocyle to automatically water every day or two like Lamarque and Leonie have but then hope sprinks eternal and you never know, maybe I will get these giants to take up on the hill .......See MoreMary Poppins Returns
Comments (12)My son's favourite movie of all time was Mary Poppins. To the point where if we found a VHS or DVD copy of the movie new or used, we bought it. He had Down Syndrome and while he knew how to use the players for both types of movies, he was a little hard on the tapes and dvd's. He always had several in the house. His caregiver called me a few days ago. She said, "Oh, Debby! There is a new Mary Poppins movie, did you see that?" I said, "I sure did, but I really don't think Brandon would have liked it at all. It's not the original." She agreed 100%. Brandon passed away 5 1/2 years ago. He was cremated along with a copy of his favourite movie....See Morejaspermplants
