Need help deciding finalists for David Austin rose beds
Comments (24)Thank you to all the kind respondents to this thread! After quite the ordeal, and several changes of heart and mind, I have finalized my rose list and placed my orders. I ended up ordering more than I originally planned, since I had to remove ALL my roses in front of my house due to rose rosette disease. I will be starting fresh, replacing the soil completely. The finalists, for those who care or may be interested, are ... From Rogue Valley Roses:- Zephirine Drouhin (replacing my beloved) Kathleen Harrop (how could I resist Zephy's sport?) Duchesse de Rohan (Tolkien fan here) Snowbird Yesterday (my free rose) From Heirloom Roses: Braveheart (thanks for the suggestion, Kate!) From Burlington Roses: Marshmallow Fluff From Roses of Yesterday and Today: Felicite Parmentier From High Country Roses: Boule De Neige Alfred Colomb From David Austin: Darcey Bussell Princess Alexandra of Kent Olivia Rose Austin Queen of Sweden Redoute The Alnwick Rose The DA roses are grafted bare roots, all others are own-root. So excited!!...See MoreBest David Austin’s?
Comments (64)Since this is a new rose bed that I started last year, do you think I should focus on only purchasing the bigger bushes that will go in the back (I want a full lush David Austin, English garden look) unless I see something I can’t resist, or just buy what I love and place smaller in front and hope I’ve left space accordingly? I hate to have to move them around. Also, regarding companion planting, do I wait till I get most of my roses in place? Although those can be easily moved in winter...See MoreDavid Austin’s for humidity
Comments (22)I'm in Maryland, so my humidity is quite extreme, and I have to say planting DAs in my no-spray garden was a mistake. Not a single plant I could describe as healthy. By comparison, a few landscaping roses I have by the front door are spotless. But it's too late now -- I'm hooked and I can't imagine spring without them. When summer comes along, I shift my focus to summer perennials, and my veg and fruit garden. But if I ever move... no more Austins for me. Carding Mill today and back in May:...See MoreDavid Austin’s Fair Bianca
Comments (8)I do not grow Fair Bianca and I hope someone who does comments here soon. I do however grow a good variety of David Austin roses and very very few are blackspot resistant enough in the south to be grown no spray. I specially love white roses and I am always looking for healthy ones. I am pretty certain I do not have her because the reviews have not been stellar. The best “near whites” Austins I grow no spray are Desdemona and Lichfield Angel and Claire Austin. I also grow tranquility which gets more blackspot that the other two but it is very vigorous and makes good blooms for cutting. I do not have a good picture of Claire because it was new this year, but it stayed very very clean. Desdemona Tranquility Lichfield Angel is excellent Fair Bianca does look gorgeous and I hope someone else can give you some good news. If you end up trying it please let me know how she does for you....See Morethe_morden_man
