What plants are you looking forward to the most?

Ive sown about a hundred jugs so far, and while i love all the plants ive chosen, i am most looking forward to the hollyhocks and foxgloves! I need some height in the back of the garden, and i love that hummingbirds love these plants. Ive never had them in the garden before, so i cant wait to have them this year! I also have a pack of annual heliotope seeds, i cant wait to smell the blooms again!

Columbine, gaura, foxglove, Himalayan blue poppy, geum and monarda top the very long list of what I winter sowed. I've successfully grown columbine from seed in years past but the plants turned out spindly. I've never tried to grow the others and this is my first time winter sowing. I've got 201 jugs of faith sitting out in the cold lining both sides of my breezeway. I found a gorgeous hot pink mallow at the hardware store and look forward to sowing that a little later.

Delphinium exaltatum - Never sprouted last year - were sown in paper tubes... Never using tubes again!

Pink figleaf hollyhock - Was obsessed with finding seed for this.. Tried and failed to trade for it.. Finally found someone who had some for sale, and she sent me some as a gift because I alerted her to a malfunctioning page on her website.

Penstemon grandiflorus 'Esprit' - Saw some gorgeous penstemon on a trip to Vancouver a couple years ago, hope this turns out like the type I saw.

various primulas - Some bloom very early, and I am looking forward to having more flowers in early spring. I am also fascinated with the candlabra types.

Cherokee purple tomatoes and other heirloom tomatoes - I don't even like tomatoes unless they are cooked in a sauce, but DH loves tomatoes and I am looking forward to seeing what he thinks of some of the more unusual heirlooms.

Garlic - Love garlic, and hope it really does repel bugs from the roses.

I'm excited about a lot of roses this Spring: I'm finally allowing myself to acquire Lady Hillingon...we'll see if there is enough heat for her here. Even if it's a failure, I'm going to try. Jenny Duval: I don't care if she has a terrible reputation for suckering- the color of the flowers is worth it, and maybe my clay soil will slow her down a little. I can't wait to see what my band of Gruss an Coburg does: it's putting out all kinds of new growth! In October, I rescued two beat up and abandoned 5-gallon pots of 'New Zealand'. The color and scent are lovely, and I think it's the kind of "Modern" hybrid tea that should make some people think twice about "no moderns" snobbery. I'm also VERY excited to see the Spring behavior of the 5-gallon plant of Zephirine Drouhin which I was given to me last summer. I've never grown her before, and I've read a lot of complaints about stingy re-bloom, but mine had flowers on it all through August, September and October. Basically, I'm just excited about all roses, all year long.

Which Hybridizer's Intros Do You Look Forward to Most?

Pat and Grace Stamile sold Floyd Cove and moved to CA but both are still hybridizing. However, part of their agreement in the sale was that they couldn't introduce anything for a period of years. They ARE finding it a challenge to hybridize on the Pac. coast - blooms don't open as well, etc. But I look for them to have some introductions over the next couple of years. What they are doing now is on a much more limited basis than the big operation they once ran, however. I too LOVE almost anything from Judy Davisson, Curt Hanson and Jamie Gossard, I also grow a lot of plants from Reg. 3 hybridizers because they were hybridized locally and do well here : Margo Reed, Jim Murphy, Pat Cochenour, Don Herr, all have great plants that perform like troopers in my garden and I never hesitate to add their plants. I do grow quite a few plants from Reg.2 hybridizers in recent years - have enjoyed some from Bret Clement,Sandy Holmes, Gerald Bushong and others. Lots of great hybridizers out there! I will say (and it has taken years of growing daylilies to learn this) that in recent years I have shied away from some of the Southern grown plants in favor of those which are grown in similar climates. Some of those beauties with the big edges for example, never look like that here, and I'm tired of the frustration of trying to grow a Southern belle that will never be happy here.Some Southern plants that generally do well here on the edge of zones 6/7 are the Ellers plants and Nan Wilkerson's.

What Tomatos Are You Most Looking Forward To Tasting?

I'm with Robert and Suzie on this one. The first tomato is the one we look forward to the most. Technically, we've already had our first three tomatoes from our plants in pots, so for us the first tomato thing already is over. Like all tomatoes that have set and ripened in cooler temperatures, their flavor, while still good and certainly superior to grocery store tomatoes, is not the same as a tomato that will ripen in hotter temperatures in May or June. The first tomato from an in-ground plant likely will be from Better Boy, which bloomed insanely early, but the ones I'm looking forward to the most are those from the black, purple or pink varieties like J D's Special C-Tex, Spudakee Purple, Spudatula, Greek Rose, Cherokee Purple, etc. It is likely our first fruit from in-ground plants, if not Better Boy, will be from Terenzo or LIzzano, but I don't particularly crave the flavor of a typical red hybrid cherry. I crave the OPs that are impossible to come by in stores....and when I have bought the commercially grown OPs from places like Central Market, they did not taste nearly as good as OPs grown here in our garden. Fresh and locally grown still is best, regardless of the name of the variety. Suzie, Say it isn't so! I have steadfastly refused to look further out at the forecast for next week because I didn't want to see another potential cold front. I told Tim this morning that it wouldn't surprise me to have one next week, since that has been a very consistent pattern for the last few weeks ....but I sure was hoping for a pattern change. Some of my plants soon will be too tall to cover. At about 2.5-3' tall now, some of the potatoes already are getting hard to cover, and this heat is making them grow by leaps and bounds. Even with floating row cover, there's a limit to how much you can cover, and the taller the plants get, the harder it is. For us, the rain has tapered off a lot down here the last two weeks....and my ground is cracking. Crazy, isn't it? Usually the ground doesn't crack until June. All winter I looked forward to spring so much. Now,I look at all the crazy roller coaster weather and say to myself "This? This is what you were waiting for?" It was 91 degrees at our house yesterday and yet our forecast for later in the week shows 34 degrees. It seems ridiculous to have both of those temperature readings in the same week. I'll be happy with whatever tomatoes we get this year because something tells me we aren't going to have the huge harvests we were blessed with last year. I am so happy we canned, froze and dehydrated a 2-3 year supply in 2012 because it may be that we don't get enough fruit this year to make/can salsa and all that other stuff. Dawn

Which new roses are you most looking forward to?

I am VERY excited about seeing all my roses bloom this year (hopefully) as I had several late additions last year that did not bloom for me because they were so young & it was so late in the year. However that did not stop me from purchasing more roses this year, because I just couldn't help myself. My newbies from last year I can't wait to see in bloom: Madame Joseph Schwartz Kronprinzessin Viktoria Reine de Violettes Mme. Issac Pereire Rosette Delizy Duchesse de Brabant Green Rose Heritage Lady Hillingdon New Additions for this year I can't wait to see: The Shepherdess Lyda Rose Golden Wings Dark Desire Dame de Coeur Happenstance Mme Antoine Mari Distant Drums Mme Alfred Carriere Charlotte Baby Love Blueberry Hill Blush Noisette Cramoisi Superieur Bolero Gruss an Aachen Pope John Paul ll Holy cow, when I write them all out like that it looks like SO many!!! They are coming from several different nurseries, so this is my first time seeing them written all together.....That's kinda scary, but still mostly EXCITING! I'm with you, Blueisland, I'm glad I'm not especially talented at math, because I never hope to know how much money I have spent in the last 2-3 years on roses.... I could have probably bought a cheap car with the total, especially if you include shipping on all these! Oh well, you can't take it with you! Let's just enjoy nature's beauty while we can!

Of what's already planted, my spring-blooming roses and tulips, beautiful hyacinths I cannot now replace and crocus only because they're first. Next the delphiniums and want to see if a couple other things survived the winter.

Of what I've WS or will, the violas and pansies. I'm just hoping for some surprises with all the others.

I'm equally excited about 3 yellow daylilies I ordered and to see if Rozanne comes back.

Out of all the jugs I have or am planning on sowing there are just three that I can't wait to see:

1. My perennials
2. My annuals
3. My vegetables

Did I leave anything out???? Nope, I think that about covers it.

White Texas Star hibiscus. I grew the red last year. Hoping to add the white to a rain garden this year.

Wow so hard to choose. I think probably all the Rudbeckia's I have sown (I sowed several varitites too).

SOme came from trades and some I bought but all are going to be nice.

ALso maybe the alyssum for my borders.

Petunias! I sowed 5 different kinds so far. lol I'm on a petunia kick.

Prunus Virginiana - Eastern Chokecherry. Haven't sowed it yet as the trade is being finalized, but I saw this tree this past year and was most impressed with it.

Also a bunch of Native plants, 2 of them Goldenrods and several others being Asters. We have 16 different Goldenrods in our province and can't wait to add more to my gardens. :O)

I'm looking forward to the new malva's I'm adding to my pink ones, seeing what blooms from last year's sprouts. This year delphiniums and lupins and verbena are especially exciting.
That's on top of all the calendula, morning glories, heuchera and sunflowers I found out I loved last year.

I am really looking forward to the agastache, penstemon, and rudbeckia Irish Eyes. I just sowed my first dozen jugs today and hope to finish up another two dozen jugs tomorrow.

Gosh, I have sooo many new seeds I am looking forward to getting sprouts from, I suppose Prarie Smoke, Quaking Grass, Butterfly Bush and Gay Butterflies are at the top of the list, but there are so many that are new to me, lol, I am looking forward to all of them! :)
