Not really a blog. I did start a website 100 years ago and promised myself each day I would work on it and complete it and I don't keep promises to myself, so how does anyone expect me to keep other promises. :)

There is no THERE there, however, but it was a good start long ago and far away.

There will be a section on my web site to document the development of my gardens, and to record my observations, trials, tribulations, and random thoughts. I wasn't originally going to do this -- I thought it seemed a bit self-absorbed. (I generally shy away from tooting my own horn.) My husband (my computer guy) insists that people like to read what I have written, and they find what we are doing here to be interesting . . . so a blog (or some form of online journal-thing) is in my future. Stay tuned.

I was not sure whether I wanted to start a website about roses or writing a blog.. Like those of you who have websites know, it takes more work and computer-skills than writing a blog.

A blog is easy to update and I think that is what I miss from many wesbsite: more updates. Blogs are more like reading a newpaper, while websites often is like reading a book. I find blogs offer something I miss from many websites: The possibility of interaction and community. Sort of the same thing we get as members here on the Gardenweb Rose Forums. I really think many of you could write interesting blogs ...if you had the time. So don´t be shy ...

Peplil, you have such a gorgeous garden and some teas I have never seen before. You have some available to you in Australia that we don't have here, I think. You don't by any chance ship to Florida, do you?

Would love to tell you what I know about any rose you are interested in.
However, I am pretty sure that the US does not allow importation from Australia. The best thing to do would be to speak to one of the 'real' rose growers like Ruston's or Nieuwesteegs, not only would they know the laws but would also know how to ship you plants correctly.
This is just an accidental hobby for me. There is only one supplier of own root roses in Australia. All but 5 of my roses are budded, so this project began as a way to get own roots for my garden. I grew a couple last year and then started the rest. Then some friends asked if I would grow them some. Since I was doing it anyway I started more than I needed. Now I have baby roses all over the place....

Gean: I am out taking lots and lots of pictures these days since more and more roses begin to bloom everyday. Some of them are bound to turn out good since I have daily access to over 1000 different roses (Even though I only grow about 200 different myself. ( but many of each of those that are good for cutting). I better take classes this fall in flowerarrangements too, since all I know how to make are big plonks of roses in vases). I have also gotten many close-ups of insects that chew away on our roses and have gotten a better understanding of them. We also have the worst drought here in over 50 years and the weather anomalies just seems to go on and on ... 3 record warm vinters in a row, record rainfall (last year), scorching sun for 347 hours in may (Sunniest month ever recorded!). I never thought I would see roses that are totally toasted/roasted - burnt to a crisp by the sun up here. I really sympathise with the farmers and if we are not getting any substantial amounts of rain soon. It will become forbidden to water our gardens. Now that! - I would never believed could happen here! In California or like we saw last year in mid-south eastern states. But not here! I even think Sweden where marianne lives have had very nice sunny weather. And I think Melissa in Italy have finally gotten rain! But I think Jon and Andrea in England look forward to be getting more sun soon. Strange how the weather can be so different in such a realatively small area as Europe.

Perhaps you know about it already, but if you are interested in flower arranging there is a Japanese blog/webpage called Hisako's Roses.

She has recently cut back a bit and much of her site is in Japanese, but the arrangements she does are quite inspiring. Japan has a lively interest in old roses and I have a feeling the Japanese internet world is an unexplored paradise for garden lovers. (They do a lot of container gardening). Too bad I don't read Japanese, myself.

It amazes me everywhere I go people tell me stories about their favorite rose or some heartrending story about how roses have deeply affected their lives. I try to post weekly, when my roses bloom, I try to post a few pictures as well. I am grateful for this forum. --

Now is a good time to remind rambler lovers that I created a web site several years ago that commemorates Michael Walsh and his rambler roses. They are blooming throughout the northeast now and it is an opportunity to visit some of the old neighborhoods and back roads and do some rose rustling.

I don't have any blog but did buy my own domain for the sole reason that I have more control over presentation and put up a few slideshows of this and that. But I'm not really getting my full money's worth out of it. It's a .com, but I've never sold anything off it, but it loads faster and is down much less than some of those other sites. I also use it to temp store my photos to embed in posts or sometimes send family & friends links to them rather than a lot of attachments, giving them more control if they want to bother with it or not and not clogging up their inbox and slow downloads big emails take.

I did start a blog, but don't know enough about roses and decided best keep my opinions about other things to myself and not provoke people, not that anybody on this forum does that.

I did start keeping a diary on my computer. I will try to get back to your blog but looked at too much today and talked too much. You have a lot of knowledge and experience to impart, was wishing I'd saved all your beautiful artist's drawings and photos of your arbors and trellises on your heavy metal thread, just for me to refer to, not to post anywhere else.

I even seriously looked into taking a welding course, but at my age, I think working in that heat and equipment would be too hard on me with my physical limitations and dangerous to try at home.

I thought you'd be interested t know that Excelsa grows practically wild in our hillstation of Kodaikanal in South India. We are at 7000 feet elevation and from April to June, practically every garden has Excelsa in glorious bloom. We also grow Evangeline.

Congratulations Niels, on your garden blog! Seems like Europe, Australia and Asia have more than here in the US. Time to step it up here people! It's a great labor of love, no doubt, and you are putting yourself out there for the world to see, a lot of folks are not quite ready to do that. And there is the generational issue. Some people are more adept and comfortable with the genre of blogs. Then there is the time issue. Most of us want more of it. And of course, the blog becomes you. At least an extension of you.

Journaling is something everyone should explore, and if you are comfortable enough, you can try it as a blog. I'm working up the nerve now!

On a side note, here's a gardening blog I enjoy, a compilation written by four women and several guest writers. It's funny and irreverant, just how I like it!

Kodaikanal, India!

I am sure Mike Walsh never dreamed that his roses would naturalize on the other side of the globe. That really is astonishing and wonderful.

I do know how glorious these ramblers are when a whole town or countryside grows them. I was on Nantucket Island yesterday and the predominant roses were 'American Pillar,' 'Dorothy Perkins,' and 'Dr. Van Fleet' and they were all over the island in all the big and little communities. These three roses must have been passed around the island for decades because in some of the older communities these roses were growing on every house, fence and yard.
