Troubleshooting help needed

Any clue what's happening to my caryopteris? As you can see it is dying out in the middle. Was perfectly fine until ~1 month ago. I have had caryopteris in this spot for many years. Only thing different is I recently had sprinklers installed, wondering if perhaps too much water - ?. (I have re-set them so they don't water every day now). Other than that thought, I really have no idea what might have caused this.

Well, to me, it certainly has the appearance of a plant with some form of root rot or other fungal/bacterial rot caused by being too wet. Certainly a possibility.

i have 4 different ones..

as far as i am concerned.. it was frost/freeze damage ... but they hung on and struggled to bud out .. until that intense heat wave and drought hit ...

the rest of the plant looks OK.. doesnt it ... ruling out a root problem ... and disease really isnt selective to certain branches..

i have been contemplating such for weeks.. as i watched it happen.. but i cant really say any other thing could have done it ...

with your old wood there.. i surmise you dont cut it to the ground.. and neither do it.. but i am pretty sure.. some peeps here do do that ... especially warmer zone peeps ... so i wonder.. had we cut it to the ground.. would we be having this issue now ... probably not.. if i am anywhere close to being right ...

thats my theory.. and i am sticking with it ...

First, there is nothing "non-organic" about adding sulfur to the soil. Second, a half-inch of compost under the tree isn't going to lower the pH as 'quickly' as sulfur; the tree is not happy and you want to lower its stress as quickly as possible. Third, maybe Garg has an elevator phrase for this, but elemental sulfur is more readily used by soil bacteria to convert to sulfuric acid, which lowers pH; the sulfate ion may bind with something else & not do the job, or buffer the S reaction. Hard to say. This is not to say OM application is a waste of time - this is to say time shouldn't be wasted. Lastly, one hopes the lessons here about the basics of soil can be applied to the business in the future - those PedOCaL soils in that place have high salts and pH for a reason. Do you have reduced pressure on both hot and cold, or just one of them? Check the screens on your faucets. Sometimes work on the pipes disturbs sediment in the pipes and it collects in the screens on the ends of the faucets. Be sure you hooked up to the hot and cold sides of the hot water tank properly. There is a little ball in the hot side that prevents water from flowing backwards, if they are reversed. Did you solder the fittings too close to the tank, while they were on the tank? There is plastic inside the tank fittings and it will melt and block the pipe if it gets too hot. Is the shut-off valve before the meter wide open? When you have all your taps closed, does the meter stop? If it doesn't, this could indicate a leak someplace. Buy a pressure guage that screws onto any of your faucets and see what the pressure really is. They are only about $7 at any hardware store. Just a few thoughts off the top of my head.

I have an Aquapure 1400, am getting 120 and 121 error codes and the cell grid keeps coating up with CaCO3. All water conditions are within range except the Cl. Jandy sent me a replacement backboard but the problem persists. I have used a multimeter to test the transformer inputs. The 1-8, 2-7 and 3-6 tests are where they should be but the 4-5 test reads 60mVDC and it should read 120 mVDC. The output to the cell is 35 VDC but it should be in the range of 22 - 28 VDC. The old back board got similar readings. Do I have a faulty transformer?

You didn't say how you T'ed but there isn't much to go wrong with a ordinary copper fitting. I'd suspect that you picked up a piece of sediment somewhere, which isn't uncommon if you shut off the main water supply. I had a Pfister faucet that had sediments filters built into the supply lines on the inlet side. Or a piece has worked its way into the cartridge which will need to cleaned out or replaced. What you might try doing is disconnecting the cold supply line and putting it in a bucket or something. "Plug" the spout of the faucet with a rag, turn on the hot water and turn the lever towards warm (or open the cold valve). That will force water backwards, down the cold water supply line. Needless to say that can get a little messy so you might want to have a help and a few extra towels for clean up.

No, the poor thing was fully leafed out prior to this setting in, it was going gangbusters prior to middle of June.

That's really weird. It almost looks like someone sprayed it with Roundup.

My bets would be on some sort of fungal problem caused by wet foliage, high humidity, drought, high temps. That's a pretty dense looking plant - lots of stems, lots of leaves. Maybe it just succumbed to not enough air circulation and the other stuff I mentioned.

This has been the worst year in memory for me as far as disease problems go. I've had problems I've never had before.

btw .. standing out the back door today .. to clarify.. i have 3 different ones .. two affected.. 4 different daphne.. 2 affected.. and 3 mock orange ... 2 affected ...

all in full sun.. exposed.. and twice FROZE ... and they ALL budded out ... and then the heat hit ...

what more can i say ... you are about 40 miles east of me.. you had to have had the freezes ... but for the concrete jungle you live in ...

and say hi to sissy for me.. she was a good sis.. to spend the day on a weird trip to adrian ...

one other thought.. get out the pruners.. and go hunt out the branch .. you might find it cracked off down near the bottom.. maybe one of the drunken irrigation guys stepped on it.. this used to be a plague ... when the kids were smaller. .. a physical injury ...

I WAS running the sprinklers everyday, not anymore - took a while to figure out how to set the system :0)

Never thought about physical injury - entirely possible one of the workers busted the branches; they trampled a few other things (a hazard of having work done this time of year...) Didn't think of the voles, either.
