i might get some free sugar maples

so my neighbor asked me yesterday if i needed some trees. i asked him what kind and he told me he has several sugar maples that are about 4-5 feet tall. so i said sure, id love to have a couple.

later in the day i started thinking that its kind of late. last year i planted a cleveland select at about this time and it didnt make it(no big loss, lol). now i have no idea if he is really going to come through on this deal, but if he does within the next couple of weeks, should i plant the trees?

Where are you located? Have the sugar maples leafed out where you are?

If they are in containers, I think they will be fine with a little attention. If he's digging them up from the ground, they will have a tougher time, depending on how big the rootball is.

i am in north eastern oklahoma. i have not seen his trees yet, but i would think they are leafed out now, as pretty much all the trees around here are now. i am guessing he will be digging them up.

since i like to garden under my trees .... and hate surface roots.. i would get rid of the maple in its entirety .... [i dont really care about the lawn either way, it just wouldnt be in my equation] and then move one of the oaks into the front yard ... i add this just so you will think outside the box of the parameters you have listed ... no linear thinking here ... even better.. i would just leave the 10 footers in back.. they are getting a bit large to move with complete success.. and secure a new oak for the front ... also.. on your .6 acre lot .... just how far from the house are we contemplating a 50 to 100 foot tree??? what tree you plant... to reach over your beloved house might be more important that some of your other variables .... when we subtract the house and garage from the .6 ... what are we left with .. 50 by 50 feet of front yard???? just consider all that .... or what everyone else said ... you must allow for all the variables.. not just the maple loving lemmings .. lol ... obviously i have no vested interest in what you opt for ... just trying to get you to think it all out .... good luck ken

To repeat what has been said a number of times before, there are Red Maples (Acer rubrum) in varying cultivars and then there are other cultivars of maples whose leaves turn red in the fall. There are also maples, mostly Japanese maples but other species as well, whose leaves come in red or reddish, some of whose leaves stay red and some turn green. The TRUE Red Maple is the A. rubrum, so called, as far as I know, because the flowers, which are very early before the leaves, are very red, as are the early stages of the samaras. Any other tree, if of another variety of maple (Norway, silver, etc.) MAY have the word red somewhere in its name, or have red leaves all summer or in the fall, but it will NOT BE a Red Maple, although it may be a red-colored maple, for example, the above mentioned Crimson King Norway Maple. Sorry for the lecture, but it's a pet peeve, and so you got the rant....

Yes, very flaky. Don't know how they do it, but you could not tell the difference between the oilive oil or regular fats. Their cheese cakes are a dream too and are fat free. I tried to make some using the fat free creamed cheese, but it turned into a watery mess. Theirs must use some kind of thickener that doesn't need any baking. They are sold in plastic pans. They claim to be a mail order outfit too, and even sell to some retailers now. I didn't like their gluten free donuts very much though, as they were a baked donut with a sugar free filling, a real shock to nayone expecting them to be the same texture as a fried, flour based one. I could enjoy the chocolate ones though, not bad. If I were to try the pie crust with oilive oil, it would be one that is not extra virgin as it doesn't need that taste to come through unless it was in a vegetable pie of some kind. The secret is to have the oilive oil and flour very cold so it dosn't make the dough too soft.

In good soil and no really harsh drought conditions, they get pretty huge. I would say comparable to an oak when given time. I will GUESS, 80 ft wide and 80 -100 ft tall. I am being very generous on these measurements, though. It will NOT be a small tree. The Sugar Maple is the only maple I will plant in my yard as a shade tree. Once my oaks and other shade trees get big, I just may want a Japanese maple, or some small shade loving maple THEN. Poaky1

They probably won't do well. Best time to dig them out of the ground is during the dormant season.

beg him to wait until fall ...... as soon as the leaves fall off ...

otherwise.. they are free.. besides a little exercise.. what do you have to lose ...

Our local sugar maples (both native and recent imports from colder climates) are in full on leaf out growth phase. It is definitely too late here in 6a to dig and transplant sugar maples here. I container grown would probable be OK, or maybe a Balled and Burlap tree with allot of careful care, but I personally don't think they would stand much of a chance if moved right now with much hotter summer days not far away.
