Best, Longest, Weirdest, Favorite Rose Names

I can't think of the best ones I've heard but names like Souvenir de la Reine d'Angleterre, Herzogin Viktoria Adelheid von Coberg-Gotha, Archduchesse Elizabeth d'Autriche- I just love saying, or trying to say them. Anybody got some good ones?

I don't have anything as exciting or delightful as all these stories. I suppose one odd occurrence was a large gopher snake on the deck that had wrapped itself around a terrified rabbit. I have no idea what he thought he was doing since the rabbit was much too large for him to eat. My husband extricated the rabbit, who ran off without saying thank you, but the snake stayed on the deck for a few minutes hissing at my husband, who had thwarted his plan to.......good question. Another was the bobcat who sat in the roses a few feet from the dining room French door. I suppose he was studying his surroundings that were a little different from the norm, i.e. tall weeds, dusty bushes and live oaks. Ingrid

Which David Austin (DA, english) roses last longest in a vase?

I have found the English Roses to be a disappointment as cut flowers. It isn't just the short vase life, a lot of them have weak stems too that can't hold the large blooms upright for flower arranging. I'm moving away from them because of these faults. There are a few exceptions. Of the David Austin roses that I've grown FAIR BIANCA (white) and EVELYN (apricot pink) did the best as cut flowers, but good luck finding them in commerce. The hybrid tea ROUGE ROYALE (red) looks like an Austin rose but does extremely well as a cut flower. I can get blooms that last a week in a vase. GOLDEN CELEBRATION (yellow) is great if you live in an area not plagued by black spot. To condition the vase water add a pinch of sugar and one or two drops of bleach. Don't forget to recut the stems under water in the sink and then immediately plunk the roses into the vase. If air gets into the stem then it will form a bubble, travel up the stem, and collapse the bloom. Not a big deal if you only want one or two days of vase life, but I grow roses as much for cut flowers as garden specimens.

Luxrosa -- 'Georg Arends' did get hit with blackspot here in NJ -- as did almost all the others, with a few interesting exceptions, notably 'Golden Buddha' bred by Paul Barden, which has remained PERFECT save for the occasional mildew on a leaf or two (and this says A LOT about a rose in the mid-Atlantic), and the only spray I used was neem oil, baking soda and dish soap in water as a modified Cornell mixture a few times up until late June. 'Georg Arends' shed damaged leaves rather quickly, and did get to an "almost naked" stage once, but leafed out again rather quickly. Keep in mind that this is a rose that came only this Spring as a band from Vintage. I let it have only a few blooms, and yes, they were VERY VERY fragrant -- strong, sweet "old rose" that is said to be "pure Centifolia" but being as I've never smelled a Centifolia, I can't comment on the comparison. They were a monochrome, unshaded pure pink, shaped like a typical fat Hybrid Perpetual cabbage but with the folded-back pointed-petal look of a Hybrid Tea. Considering its ancestry (it's about 3/8 Tea and 5/8 Hybrid Perpetual), that makes sense. Oh, and the plant is completely thornless -- I still haven't found the first thorn. It's growing as though it will be a short climber, or at least something that would do best with a little support -- like against an open picket fence -- so I have it where I can attach it to the lower part of the deck railing as it gains a little more height. I think much of the vase-life is a result of it taking a couple days to fully open, due to how many petals it has. Once opened, it holds up another couple of days. I cut one in the "loose-but-closed" bud-stage, sepals fully back, and gave it to my neighbors who share the yard with me. They kept it in a vase inside right by the window where I could see it while working in the yard, and I watched it unfurling over a couple days. By about the fifth day, it started looking as though it was finally past its peak. And I can't imagine they did anything more than stick it in a vase with plain tap water. If you can't find a plant by Spring, let me know and I'll try rooting another piece of mine. I was hoping to interest Linda Loe of Long Ago Roses in growing a few rooted cuttings of some things I picked up from Vintage which don't seem to be available elsewhere, so at least they don't disappear from commerce. 'Georg Arends' was one of them, so I was going to root a few anyway. HelpMeFind has Pickering as one of the other nurseries carrying it, but it's not on their current HP inventory on their website (perhaps they used to carry it?). Hortico may be the only other way of getting it in the US, though once again, I don't see it among their current HP inventory. :-) ~Christopher When it arrived and was repotted, April 25, 2013: First flower I allowed to open, May 22, 2013: A pic showing 'Georg Arends' on the left ('Nouveau Monde' on its right), taken September 2, 2013. I always wonder why certain rose names fail to make the trip across the Atlantic. One such rose is Parole. It was bred by Kordes and launched at the 2001 Chelsea flower show by Mattocks as Buxom Beauty. It was no coincident that the introduction of the rose happened in tandem with the introducion of a limited edition revolutionary bioform bra with name of - wait for it - "Buxom Beauty"! This was a well executed marketing ploy. I don't think Kordes publicists did any better by introducing it in north America as Parole. What on earth were they thinking of? Even if the intention was not what you think - "parole" in German apparently means a military passport - the connotation of that name is just not becoming of what is otherwise a gorgeous rose. Instead, it stirs up images of a gorgeous, beautiful criminal! It's a bit like Chevrolet marketing the Nova with images of brilliant starburst, whereas in Spanish, it literally means "no go"!! It just isn't an easy job being a corporate marketeer, is it?

I like Happy Butt (ok, not an Antique, but still!); La Biche and La Ouche; and I put in a Bermuda Mystery rose so I can tell people it is a mystery to me(!) and Thomas Affleck so I can make the Affleck duck noise when I say his name....

"Blue Moon". I was disappointed to see that Blue Moon isn't actually blue color after all. There are other names that don't even suit the rose itself. Take for instance - "Stairway to Heaven". When I think of Heaven, I immediately think of sky blue or white - but the actual rose is red which is kind of strange.

The naming of a rose is important to me. Take for instance - "Abraham Darby" - I really liked the flowers of this rose - but unfortunately, I also knew someone by the name Abraham back at my high school years who gave me a rough time.

"Fair Bianca" - Biance is my 2-yr old niece - so I'm thinking of getting that rose.

I kind of like saying 'Orpheline de Juillet' and 'Belle sans Flatterie'. . . And nothing rolls off the tongue quite so mellifuously as 'Blanc Double de Coubert' now that I've learned to pronounce it properly. Too bad it's so horrendous in my zone . . . I'd love to be able to say, 'Have you ever seen my Blanc Double de Coubert? You just MUST come over soon and see Blanc Double de Coubert!'

'Cuisse de Nymphe Emue' translated as The Thigh of the Passionate/Aroused Nymph. I think I remember reading that it was too naughty of a name for some people at one time.

I like Tipsy Imperial Comcubine as a name, I was going to buy it for the name alone.
Most of the french names I find hard to pronounce but Oelleit Flammand is a tough one.

Hoffman von Fallersleben, Tanusblumchen, Asta von Parpart, Gruss an Germershausen, Hamburger Phoenix, Pink Above All, and my favorite, Reigierungsrat Rottenberger. The Germans have great alliterative, tongue-twisting names and often bring up very weird associations with English words which make the roses humorously memorable to me. Asta von Parpart sounds like a very thin and rich socialite who pursued a career in film. Pink Above All is just so, I don't know, girly!

Oh there a lots. Those old French names are so evocative. A few favorite rose names are:

I have always loved to say Veilchenblau and bought the rose just so I could say the name.

I also think La Biche could earn a spot in my garden...based on name and attitude alone.

One of my favorite rose names is Suzanne Marie Rodocanachi...She's an HP...and I tried bringing her in to this country through Sangerhausen years ago...never got viable budwood....alas...Lee

Me too. I use it as a user name on a different non-gardening forum. You should have seen the googling going on when the other posters were trying to figure out what it meant.

Fair Bianca is wonderful. I just planted her this year and she is a new favorite. Pink buds that open to exquisite full white flowers:

Melissa, emilyg: I use Firefox too (mainly). If you single-right-click the tabs on Lee's page, then choose "Open Link in New Tab", you should be able to see the pages. IE works with Lee's page "as designed".

I like Bremer Studmuffin. I'm in my jammies and can't run down to see the tag right now. I got it at Ashdown and while I was tryign to pronounce the name, she said, we all call that studmuffin. I have him place with Mrs. BR Cant, and a few other girls. It makes me smile every time!

There is also "Sweet Surrender" which makes me think of...well...things I might do with another in a garden. OK, 20 years ago, 30?

HMF does list a Flaming Potluck. Buddhist Clothing Fragrance, that be almost as good as Tipsy Imperial Concubine.

Imagine giving garden tours, saying, "Now, I have filled this particular bed with 'Tipsy Imperial Concubines'..."

I don't know if they wear deoderant, but I can imagine they would not wash their clothing unnecessarily so I think it might pick up myriad scents. Some of course could be quite nice like chopped wood fragrance, but then there's the sweat from chopping. I think unwashed clothes could smell pleasantly complex and earthy, not chemical/floral/sanitized. That is, if the person wore deoderant but had these other interesting aromas in their clothes.

Will have to look up Flaming Potluck.

I think Seattlesuze's "Rotten Rugrats" takes the prize for long/difficult/funny. For speaking, I like to say "Souvenir de la Malmaison". But for sheer evocativeness (is that a word?), I have always loved "Belle de Crecy".

I love JonÂs and AltoramaÂs, findings and ErasmusÂ Buddha Clothing Fragrance is superbly weird all right, LOL. I have serious trouble to pronounce Reigierungsrat (the other part is easy) despite having couple of years of German at the university, alas that was a long time ago. For longest names one cannot beat the French mainly gallicas.

I donÂt find weird SDLM or Rosa Mundi at all, though SDLMÂs other name Queen of Beauty and Fragrance is very fitting. I love both names not to mention the rose.

I truly loved to get Tipsy for the name as well as for the beauty seen on the photos. I wonder about its said wonderful fragrance though.

It's not an OGR and it's not a long name but weird (to me, at least) all right: when I saw "Comtesse Vandale" listed by Vintage I had to order it to see what kind of vandalism a Comtesse is capable of doing in my yard.

A modern rose I would never grow because of its weird, obviously not favorite, name is "Social climber". A saw a few of the human kind and they weren't pretty.

Monsieur Tillier--I relate to him better than the royalty which surrounds him, he's just a plain old Mister next to a Duchesse and a Lady. I think he leaned over and propositioned Maggie the other day, the other 2 girls having proven un-approachable.

About "Buddhist Clothing Fragrance" - I'm guessing it might refer to incense, as in the scent that must cling to those beautiful yellow robes the Buddhist monks wear...
