phkk, I rooted pomegranate cuttings from a neighbor's plant(AL, on the zone 7/8 interface), back when I was about 8; planted two of them at my grandmother's home - 15-25 ft from a young (at that time) black walnut tree, I had no inkling of juglone toxicity at that age. The poms lived and grew, but did not flower or fruit for over 30 years, until my parents had to have new septic lines installed, and in the process, they trenched between the BW and the poms - almost killed the BW in the process, and it did decline over the next few years and eventually died. But! The poms burst into fruit production almost immediately after the trenching. So...in my experience, pomegranates and black walnuts are NOT compatible. Loquats... I have no idea...

Tsuga canadensis and Thuja occidentalis do well here and if there is enough sun (4-5 hours), so does Chamaecyparis obtusa. I've heard yews and white pine don't like juglone but I've seen them do well with it. tj

I have 5 ES + 1 PG growing inside of 12-15' radius from the trunk of the black walnut tree for 3 years and everything seems to be fine. To make matter even more complicated I also planted last year a very young climbing hydrangea seedling to grow on that trunk. However, I didn't dug even an inch deep in a soil. Tree was planted on a slight hill and I just gradualy added 4-6-8-10" of the soil to create depth for the planting and planted relatively small plants with root systems that could fit in those 6-8-10" depth. I have no clue what will happen next, will WT poison the hydrangeas eventualy or its roots will stay where they are, but so far everything look absolutely perfect.

I use containers that range in size from 2 liter soda bottles to 30 gallon tubs. I have begun this year to build some SWC's, but will have most of my tomatoes in 18 gallon plastic pots with two plants per pot. A few years ago, a neighbor took down a very old and very large (30 inches in diameter) black walnut tree. I tried to get some of the main trunk, but after a lot of "begging", was finally told that he had sold it all but that if I wanted, I could have the stump. As he told me I'd have to dig it out, he was grinning in that way that makes me wander if he was laughing at me. After digging for "a while", I finally used my truck to jerk the thing out of the ground. I smiled and as he helped me load it, I thanked the "gift horse" for being so generous. He laughed and asked me what I could possibly do with that "worthless" stump. I just smiled and said, "I might get a bowl or two turned out of some of it.". He just shook his head and laughed again. I just kept smiling as I drove off with the bed of my truck covered with the best part of the tree. Ted
