Hello, I am looking for a narrow, tall evergreen tree. I am thinking about 10 ft wide (wider at top when full grown is okay) and about 25-40 ft tall at maturity. Unfortunately, the place I need to plant it is directly under the edge of the drip line of a black walnut. I have done quite a bit of online research, and I see some possiblities, but the walnut issue really throws me. I am using it for screening. The first 10 ft or so of the tree is the part I need to be most narrow, so some pruning would be doable. Wildlife tree would be nice, too. Not too slow growing either. Does such a tree exist?! Dear CadillacTaste - I am wondering if you did try this and if the "Red Majestic" lived in proximity to a black walnut. I'm assuming the previous responder based the assurance on the fact that corylus americanus should be juglone resistant, but most lists seem to specify American hazelnuts, which evolved in proximity to black walnuts, and the specificity of listing American hazelnut (corylus) makes me wonder before I try my contorted hazelnut / corylus contorta / Harry Lauder's walking stick near a black walnut if perhaps the European cousin might Not be resistant to juglone. I have had the same question with regard to the various hybiscus family members, too, by the way ... are they all resistant or just some?

It is not just the shade of BW tree, There is more. BW tree releases a chemical, which I think is called Joglanole. This chemical exists in all part of the tree from root, to bark, and leave. Additionally, the root line might be even bigger than its canapy. I have read an illinois univrsity study about this, which has listed plants that are compatible and others that cannot thrive. Over the years, BW would contaminate the soil to the extent that you cannot change it. And there is no chemical to nullify that joglanole. Last year I planted tomato in a soils brough from another location. Tomato plants weredoing fine. But when thir roots reached the existing soil, they wilted and died' But there are a lot of things that are gowing just fine under BW tree, Automn olive, hawthorn, creeping myrtle (vinca?), something from hosta family, honeysucle,..But maple, pine, BW own seeding will not survive.
