I thought the ISA arborist that I spoke to about an oak a couple years ago said that they could inject it or drench it around the trunk to treat chlorosis. I also got information from the local extension office the other day about treating chlorosis; it was in regards to a maple. We were talking about it be caused by high PH. "If the soil test indicates a high soil pH, lower the pH by applying sulfur or ammonium sulfate." It's my understand that any size tree can be treated. The conversation I had with the arborist was in reference to very large mature oak in the neighborhood that was showing signs of chlorosis, I know he said it could be treated and I thought he said it was either the injection or drenching a treatment around the tree. i would tend to rule out disease or bugs.. etc ... odds just too high ... which leaves us with how they were planted ==>> duh ... it helps when i finish the thought ... which means.. its a water management problem.. perhaps due to the planting in clay.. either too much water held in the clay hole.. or not enough water ... insert finger.. or dig small holes.. and find out ... ken

I could be mistaken but I think that Oak wilt has always been here. I know Oak decline was a native pest. The problem was make worse by clearing out all of the other trees that made a barrier to help prevent transmission of the disease. There more trees in Texas than in the past. An old saying goes everywhere white man goes, trees grow. Mesquite trees are native to West Texas but only in the gullys and and ditches. Fire use to control brush. But when we built fences and houses we stopped the wildfires and that caused a greater amount of brush species. My family built a house by some oak trees north of Waco on 70 acres about 40 years ago. One of the liveoaks showed signs of oak decline. It is now about the only big oak tree still alive. My Dad once told me it was just his luck to build a house by 200 year old oak trees only to have them all die over the next 20 years. I think with the wetter weather and multitude of different species, Southeast Texas will not suffer the losses that Central Texas has experienced. It is truly sad at how many oaks trees have died. Pines may be immune to oak wilt but they sure take a beating from lighting and hurricanes. I have lost about 10 pine trees within 100 feet of my house, all over 14 inch diameter and over 70 feet tall.

It's good to know that peeling bark is normal. I haven't observed that yet on this tree but I won't worry if it does start to do that. Regarding watering I've been watering it every day since planting. I couple days here I'll probably slow that down to every third day for a couple iterations and then go to a normal watering cycle of once a week. As of today there aren't any wilted are brown leaves so I guess it wasn't too shocked by all the root work I had to do. Regarding the mulch. I use planner shavings as mulch. They are inferior to normal large wood chunk mulch but are free and keep the ground moist. This planting I was running low on shavings and mixed in some shredded paper. I've read on line that paper shreds make a great mulch around trees. I find that it's not so great and tends mat down into a hard paper mache. So I mixed it in with the shavings and that seemed to work decently.
