Is it a good idea to plant roses on 2nd floor deck?

I live in a townhome. And my deck on main floor ,ie, 2nd floor, is very very sunny. And we spend a lot of time in Sunroom adjacent to the deck (obviously). I was wondering if I can actually plant the following roses in 21-inch pots (approx. 26 inch deep) on my deck without hurting the deck and the rose's natural growing tendencies.

The roses in question are:

1. Double Delight

2. Memorial Day

3. Sweetness (Grandiflora)

4. Elle

Also, do I need such big pots for these? If you have suggestions about any other roses that will suit my needs (Fragrance, Repeat Blooms, Size and Color), please suggest by all means. I am a novice. Any suggestions will be very much appreciated.

I am not real familiar with the roses you have listed except for Memorial Day. And that is a big HT. Hopfully someone will chime in who is growing the roses in pots that you have listed.

You want to also look at the weight of each pot and make sure you raise them off the deck so your deck can stay dry under the pots. Each one of those pots will hold over 2cubic feet of potting mix, and they are heavy, even using plastic pots.

I grow a lot of roses in pot. The majority are the smaller minis, floribundas, and shrub roses. HelpMeFind/roses is a great search site that shows growth habit, scent, etc.

I guess it would depend on what your deck is made of? Will it support the weight of the pot, potting soil and a mature rose? I have had a lot of luck growing roses in containers, but remember, after a year or so they get BIG. I also suggest you go to "help me find" and eearch for roses "suitable for a container". Some of the online rose vendors also sell roses that they suggest for a container. Good luck with your searches!

I've been ws for 7+ years and generally start my perennial seeds anytime after winter solstice though mostly in late January/February. Annuals get sown in late March/early April. Most everything sprouts by midMay. I probably should have covered the jugs during some of those daily rains. With the changing weather patterns I will consider it a lesson learned and hope that we don't have another such spring for many years. Some of the jugs were "second chance" jugs, seeds that didn't sprout last year and given a second sowing to see if they might another time. Perhaps those seeds would not have sprouted this year anyway. A few of the old reliables sprouted, alcea, aquilegia, dianthus, papaver, penstemon, platycodyn. Annuals: antirrhinum, cleome, gomphrena, mirabalis, nasturtium, nicotiana, portulaca, salvia, and zinnia.

Lowes. OK - they brought the units out, put them on the platform we made, we assumed they did what they're suppposed to do & left. We didn't stand there watching because we'd just moved into the house & had plenty to do elsewhere and, hey, how hard can it be? Later that day - excited to see the "bubble show" through that big, beautiful window - I attempted a load. NOTHING. Not to panic - it just was not plugged in. Also, while my husband had it pulled out to plug in, he found that the dryer vent was not attached to the dryer - the wall, yes - not the back of the dryer. Turns out there is sort of a "cone" where you attach to & the hose slid off. (Not sure how he fixed that) It's at this point that we realize that they did not leave us a manual for the washer. We call & they say they'll get us one. In the meantime, we go online to find out what else needs to be done - like LEVELING. My husband does that and finally we're good to go. The story is a lot longer because we have a BIG mix-up with the refrigerator but at some point in there we get the manual - but not before I have to call the store manager a couple of times with questions about error messages (we had a problem with some sediment causing E02 errors - now fixed) for him to look up. SO - in the end, we love the machines, Lowes tried their best to make things right - it was just a series of freaky problems that weren't their fault - and we are happy customers. OH - the platform works like a charm - no vibrations & the additional height is great! Good luck with yours - great design!

The practical definition of a Juliet balcony is a deck that doesn't have a platform, only guard railings. The code interpretation issue is whether or not the exception to R311.3 that allows a landing less than 36" in the direction of travel is satisfied with a dimension of 0". The next question is what dimension would be allowed (2", 4", 6" etc.) I suspect you will find that your contractor knows what he is talking about. You won't be the first person to ask the building department for an interpretation of the exception to R311.3 and you may be successful but the only thing that is certain is that they cannot refuse the 4x6 deck the contractor proposed and they might accept brackets down to the existing foundation that would avoid foundation piers. They might also accept a 3x3 deck. The biggest waste of money would be the construction of two foundation piers that would later be abandoned. Ask your contractor if brackets to the foundation would reduce the cost of a 4x6 deck. If so, that might be the best solution. The contractor's offer to install the ledger board is a sign of good faith. Make sure it is through-bolted and properly flashed according to the new more strict code requirements added to the IRC after so many fatal deck failures. I recommend Grace Vycor Plus under the building wrap and over the top of the pressure treated ledger board and that should be protected with metal flashing (no unfinished aluminum). Metal flashings do not weather well when in constant contact with water on top of a ledger board so the vycor will prevent water intrusion when the metal flashing inevitably fails. the metal is essentially protecting the Vycor from UV rays. I stopped using ledger boards 40 years ago even for decks close to the ground. I always use Maine Deck Brackets.

Yet in others (at least in N.O.) trellis or "decorative" fence toppings, wiring don't count. But, yes she needs to check. @ Isabella, I still think you have a blank canvas for a really lovely yard. If you think about it, your 2nd story view isn't a whole lot different than ANY urban view of your neighbors once you get your yard looking nice.

You also need to check with your homeowner's association. Most of them out here (Calif) have rules that say no live plants on decks because when people water them they drip down below (and annoy those folk) and/or they cause water to sit on the deck and eventually cause it to rot and/or cause permanent dirt stains on the deck where the water drains from the pot. So, no, generally it's not a good idea, even if the roses would do fine there.

I remember there was another string on this forum about people growing roses in pots on their roofs. They had just run out of room on the ground, and had flat-topped (or not) roofs. I grow about 15 roses in 15 gallon nursery pots, and they give me lots of blooms. I put saucers under the pots because it catches the water that runs out the bottom. That water in the saucer slowly absorbs back into the soil in the pot. Sometimes potting soil can be hard to wet.
