I planted Leopard's Bane last year and it did not come back. I lost a Japanese Maple over the winter that had been in the ground for 3 years.

A copperleafed CArdinal Flower.... luckily I saved the seed and they are beginning to germinate... it was my fav plant last summer...

I lost 3 Echinacea "Tiki Torch." These were my only plants lost. I was looking forward to seeing them this year. :(

* Two "Lady in Red" lady ferns

* Most of an established clump of variegated Solomon's Seal has gone missing - only three or four stalks when there were 20+ stalks last year!!!

No clue what happened to these two but something suspicious going on since they are planted right next to each other...c'mon these two are tough to kill!

Lost one plant of Jolly Bee geranium (don't know what happened there, just disappeared), and a couple of Munstead lavenders--weird about the lavenders, both dead'uns were right next to living lavenders that came back well. Staging a surprise comeback from the dead is The President clematis. He disappeared last year and I planted a Hagley Hybrid to replace him. Now The President and Hagley and Jackmanii are all duking it out on one too-short wrought iron obelisk (all three have already shot over the top).

Three. A clematis, two lycoris squamigera, but the three lycoris that survived multiplied a little.

I'm in danger of losing a couple more plants during this growing season if they don't pick up.

Lots. Miscanthus, Samubucus "Thundercloud," perennial hibiscus, etc.

Mimosa, persimmon dieback. Some shrubs like viburnum and pyracantha, died back leaving one or two stems facing northeast.

My theory is we got 65 mph hot, dry winds in Sep 08 (hurricane leftovers), followed by a minus 20 degree night over the winter. I think the dessication and cold did them in, even tho the winter overall wasn't too bad.

I lost 4 irish moss clumps that I planted last fall along with purple mazus. Also lost a 5 year old japanese red maple due to my neighbor spray weed killer.

All my gaura, both the white and pink flavors and several roses. I think our extended snow on the ground for once didn't work in our favor. I might try gaura again though as I really love it.

We had a very cold and snowy winter, although the consistent snow cover throughout probably helped to insulate some of the plants. I still lost a fairly high number of plants, most of which had overwintered last year okay:

- 2 Digitalis 'Island Spice'
- about half the Digitalis purpurea, started from seed last Spring and so huge and lush last fall
- Marguerite daisy from a swap
- Aqueligia chrysantha, native yellow Columbine
- Scabiosa 'Pink Myst' (no big surprise there, lost the other 4 winter before that)
- a few of the small first year winter-sown perennials didn't make it, but most are doing great

I think some of the losses (especially the Foxgloves) were due to soil that was too soggy, some from the very cold temps (a true zone 5b winter), but who knows for sure.

I lost alot of coneflowers,butterfly weed,mums,lilies,thyme and a couple others that I can't remember names for. We had a very cold,long winter and the weather is stil 20 degrees below normal for this time of the year.

Two roses, one Coreopsis 'Big Bang', two hardy hibiscus (guess not), one Clematis 'Jackman'. Hot, dry winter last year. Will mulch more this year.

Too much to even know - it was a brutally cold winter and in some places not enough snow cover to protect plants (wind blows it off). This spring we had to deal with flooding of the Red River and our yard was submerged - part of it for weeks. I think the only plant that suffered because of the water though was a hawthorn.

Like juicyfruit, our weather is still quite cool, maybe I can hope a few will still show up?

I am discouraged.

A Jackmanii clematis (though it was from Spring Hill nursery and I bought it for a school fundraiser - will never do that again - they are too small to survive!, same with the ostrich ferns I bought from them). Let's see - 3 Queen Victoria lobelia, coreopsis "Snowberry" and "Pinwheel", one scented geranium (but other 4 are thriving), Purple Dome woods aster, and a poppy. It is a mystery why some of these died, especially the hardy varieties. I hate losing out on the money I invested, on the other hand, it opens up an opportunity to plant something new.

I didn't lose anything this winter, thanks to consistent snow cover, but a number of my columbine were completely defoliated in spring by something that worked too quickly for me to identify it.

Coreopsis 'Creme Brulee' 2 our of 3, Agastache 'Tutti Fruitti'2 out of 3. Since these are not reliably hardy in zone 5a I was grateful I had any survivors.

As usual, too many to count. I can get them through the snow & cold, but can't get them to make it once it gets cold after the snow melts - even if it's not all THAT cold.

Choc. chip bugleweed (might as well say it's dead-2 leaf sets at the end of some dead looking strings)
Candy Stripe Dianthus (Daughter trampled last year-it was hers anyway)
2 Pink Fountain Gaura just now called it quits (but several seedlings sprouting elsewhere to make up the loss)
1 small Pink Hibiscus (dog dug up)
Hollyhocks seedlings from last year didn't come back.
Red Cardinal Flower disappeared
Hardy Banana tree (dog destroyed - luckily it was only $2 last year)
Half my mutli-colored bee balm
2 carnations, but later learned they're difficult anyway

However, the plants that have survived the winter are doing better than they ever have in the 5 years I've been gardening here. Some are just huge already! Even though the dog has done her own damage, she's kept the deer from eating my stuff, so I'll keep her & she is still a puppy.

Delphinium - forget these in my zone, they just don't come back.

Only a couple of things, and I forget what they were! However, I've since lost at least a dozen or more plants (and 3 foot tall ones to boot...phlox and delphinium) to rabbits and/or woodchucks. I'm getting very discouraged.

I lost a two year old Blue Flax, but a seedling from it growing next to where it was is growing well. I also lost a Beaujolais Bonnets Scabiosa, and a Guara. Again, another Guara right next to it is doing great.

redsox,we use Deer Scram to keep the bunnies away, and it seems to work pretty well.

When I saw the thread title I asked myself if original poster meant to Mother Nature or the confounded animals.

It's a bummer when a healthy perennial gets to its third year and then something comes along and eats and/or rips off the buds and foliage. I almost dislike it more when they rip it apart and don't eat it.

Guara had nothing above ground but still has some white roots. Put it in pot and will see how it does. Think it's a goner. 1 out of 3 Salvia Greggii which I mistakenly thought could take NJ zone 6. Other 2 struggling to put out some new foliage.

1 out of 3 Campanula Summer Blues. Other 2 are being eaten one stem at a time by something. At least I got to see a couple blooms.

Too much wet and cool temps for too long now is getting to plants that did make it through winter.

Deer jumped fence around Butterfly Garden last night as I saw hoof prints in wet soil. Ate top half of quite a few plants...even ones they aren't supposed to "like".

This isn't shaping up to be a great garden year or it's just getting off to a slow start with inclement weather.
