gave up on planting - putting in pots!

Well, in our new yard, my husband has been trying to dig me rose holes. He can barely scoop a 1/2 cup of soil with each attempt. There are SO MANY rocks and roots. It's just so aggravating.

So I decided to pot them all up in very large pots (I already had bought about 10 of them from Cosco) and place them on top of the ground. Then I'll plant perrenial all around so it looks like a garden.

I'm happy with that, because the roses are higher from the ground making it easier to sniff and appreciate.

The downside is the cost (we have 30 roses to pot) and overwintering.

We'll put the roses in the garange - we have a 3 car garage, so there should be room. But in the spring next year, I won't be able to haul them all in and out every day like I did this spring - warm enough in the day and too cool in the evening.

Do you think I could leave them in the garage next spring (covered up, so they're dark) until the night time temperatures are amenable to them being outside full time? Or will this just promote scraggly growth?

Thanks for your help!

Carol
