Dog poop safety questions

Hi,

I have a spot in the vegetable garden that got rather poopy last year (I got busy with family responsibilities). I cleaned it up late in fall and the soil spent all winter without poop on it. Now I'm wondering if I can use that spot again for vegetables or if I should plant a flower-cutting garden there instead. Any advice?

Also, how far away does a plant need to be from fresh dog poop to not be contaminated? For instance, if I find some fresh stuff a few inches from a vegetable plant, should I avoid eating from that plant or its current vegie (assuming I've disposed of the poo and washed the vegie)?

Thanks
