Caudex looks a bit cracked.... Help!! :(

Upon inspecting and misting - I noticed a small branch a bit shriveled and the caudex cracking. Still pretty firm but not sure what to do. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Is the shriveled piece shown squishy or firm?
If it is squishy. I would cut it back with a razor, just past beyond the shriveled part and cut back a bit more if there is brown discoloration in the cambium layer, between wood and bark of plant.
If it is hard, maybe just watch that it does not start to become squishy.
Treat with white wood glue. I think think is what Laura uses.
If not, I am in trouble??

"Overweight people know they need to exercise and usually the issue isn't access to a gym or cost." I've never been thin, and have been on a weight roller coaster through my life too, so I speak as a fellow traveler on the same road and I speak from experience. An overweight person who gets into a regular exercise routine won't remain overweight. Why do so many who could benefit from physical activity not do so? Not infrequently, it's the same as why they don't curb their eating habits- some combination of excuse making, a lack of personal discipline and/or inadequate motivation to stay on the wagon. The "I'm not athletic" excuse or "I'm self-conscious about my appearance" excuse are both that, excuses. Many don't care for classes, fair enough, but even strenuous walking for 30 minutes at a crack can be effective and requires no equipment or ability, Giving someone a membership takes away the excuse. I would check first, no sense spending money on something that would go unused. I question the true "wisdom" of two parent "health care professionals" who would encourage a young person to undergo thoracic surgery before first exhausting all possible efforts to make lifestyle changes. These surgeries allow the person to continue to overeat, hardly a solution to what is a lifetime problem.

Yep, I did some of these last year as well and they have done pretty well for me. I spliced together pairs, triples, even five at a time to form a raft and they are all doing well. A few swelled as they grew and then pried each other apart without fusing even sliced and glued, then bound. But most of them have fused nicely and have been growing well this past summer. Many of you probably saw my thread elsewhere when I did the same thing as above. The scars will round off and fade over time.

I am not an expert by any means. I just know that when I transplanted mine the caudex got very slightly dentable. I just started watering through more often, I have very dry heat with a breeze so I tend splash water at it every other day, What was your routine before repotting it? Did you use sand before? If you put it right out in the sun after you transplanted it sunburn can be why the color change. I wait about a week before full sun. Transplanting it can be a shock Rick I wonder if this should have the roots thinned a little. Wouldn't it give them a better air circulation I think the lack of water may not be the problem but the frequency it gets water. High temps can really dry things out. Since the bottom roots got soft, does this pot have a catch dish under it? That could leave the roots in water to long. Instead of draining through.

I would also recommend cutting off the branch. I think Laura uses DAP??? I can't remember right now.

I have heard of people using cinnamon.

Thank you Mark and Charles- the branch is pretty much squishy and don't think it's going to heal. I will cut off and use DAP.
Did you notice toward the base the crack? Worried too about that. Should I seal with DAP as well?

hi Chuy!

Rick gives great advise... If it feels like it is soft and you think it is rot setting in thin I would cut it out and then seal.. I like to use waterproof wood glue. Dap is used on Plumeria main branches when cut by some, but I use the wood glue on them as well. Make sure it is waterproof ! Keep the misting away from this area. You are misting the soil? Or the tree? Just wondering!

If it is firm I would leave it alone and it might seal itself. Some of my limbs will do this, but not at the stem and main Caudex. I know it is out in the sun in your area. How often are you watering? These trees don't need misting ...this might help it to dry the areas in question.

You could always seal as it is and then cut the stem later... But if there is any moisture in the crack, it would continue to cause problems.

If it was mine.. I would Leave it in the sun, stop misting the tree if you are trying to give it moisture. Watch the watering. Dry side if possible. Watch for rot . If it seals itself great. If not , seal with wood glue after you cut the stem off and seal the crack. Make sure you use alcohol on your pruner after each cut.

Funny Laura- we did just cross. I do have waterproof DAP(had to make sure it was) lol ;-). Thank you all for the advice. I think I was slowly making it worse accidentally by misting- I would mist the whole plant just a few sprays lightly- nothing major. I don't water regularly at all. Maybe lightly once every 2 to 3 weeks.
