Pros and Cons of Peat & Muck?

In my gardening books I read that peat and muck are pretty good soil ammendments for sandy soil, which I have. Almost pure sand in fact. I also have a large swampy bog nearby where I can dig some peat by hand. In fact, as much peat & muck as I want to dig.

But today a friend of mine was upset when she heard about my plans to dig peat for my garden because she had read that peat bogs are under threat and that bogs are a non-renewable resource. She said that people are even marketing coconut fiber to replace the use of peat.

Now I don't know what to do!

What are the pros of cons of digging and using peat from a local source for gardening purposes?

Thanks!
