Well I wasn't going to buy anything this year as I am jammed full of space, however I think I have lost my 1st rose in Christopher Marlowe(my own fault), so I might plant him in the ground and wish him the best as he is occupying a pot that I could use for another Austin...the question becomes...which one though?

At my local nursery, I can choose between these as a potted rose:
The Endeavor(know little to nothing about)
Gertrude Jekyll-not sure about size in a pot, plus I already have 2 potted pinks...however Gertrude is classic, has big blooms, and has fragrance
Jude The Obscure-Not exactly my most preferable bloom form, but curious about fragrance and the color is a bit unique.

...or I can drive 30 min to another nursery and choose from:
Carding Mill-I really like CM and almost got it last year, but I already have 1 potted apricot in Abe Darby, so I'm torn.
Charles Darwin-I love the bloom form...already have Golden Celebration, but Darwin is not one MOST people have and supposedly the blooms are large and the fragrance is strong.
Glamis Castle-mostly in case Winchester Cathedral fails for me
Spirit of Freedom-love the blooms...however this rose in a pot?....ummm
Strawberry Hill-could be a nice mix to have, but don't know much
A few others that probably won't get selected since they behave like climbers

.....or I could always order one online...in which case I would opt for a rare Austin like Troilus or The Squire...or the like...maybe Summer Song as a modern.

So many choices......yet I can only pick one for the entire year...talk about a mental meltdown.

heirloom junkie: there's nothing that grosses me out in the compost except I won't put bread in there (in homage to annpat) or any type of poop. Other than that, I rip up all boxes (cereal, frozen lunches, any/all cardboard)rather than recycling them and junk mail and envelopes without the window plastic stuff. Even Diet Coke cartons...I AM an addict. I used them for lasagna beds last year and they did break down nicely under the other stuff I threw on top. So I figure eventually we eat mostly everything I buy that isn't metal or glass. RE: nuts (in the pile, that is) DH eats tons of peanuts in the shell. They of course go into the compost but break down very slowly. Last year one of the grandkids said, Grandma, your growing peanuts? Cool! Good lesson on composting for the little dumpling. Oh, don't compost dumplings, they're like bread :)

If it will protect my rose's from looking like crap in 125F heat I am willing to try it. I don't get to enjoy my rose's in the summer in the Arizona desert my growing season is when most of you are buired under the snow. I dread summers but have to stay her until hubby retires. I am willing to try a product that claim's it will stop the stress my rose's are under in Jul, Aug & Sept. I will not build a cover in my front yard that I have to take down in the winter and apply and pay for a building permit with my city hall. A product I can spray would be easier and less expensive. If I lived in Zones 5,6,7 & 8 I would poo poo this product too but when one struggles with 125F in the hot Az. heat you try anything to stop the roses from being under so much stress. I have tried tons of organic products to help with summer stress to no avail. I am always on the look out for products that are somewhat sold at a reasonable price( I would only need the 16oz size).If you lived here and put up with the ugly leaves, the proliferated blooms you would be looking for new products to stop that too, and they get plenty of water and mulch, I do not feed them in the summer because of burn. I think I will try it, unless someone here has a better idea then building a structure in my front yard. Carrie

Oh what a delicious list of winners you have all shared, and of course I want them all ;-) Cemetaryrose, I've been waiting impatiently until Anna Olivier is available at Vintage without being custom root, and her sport Lady Roberts sounds wonderful too. labrea, Mme Wagram is now on my wish list, as is isabelle's Burgundy Ice (gorgeous pictures!), Patricia's Eden and Organic tosca's Betty. mendocinorose's Wolley Dod's (r. pomifera 'Duplex' according to Vintage, but I think Wolley Dod's Rose is a much more romatic name!)is intriguing. Do you know if the large hips taste good for cooking and tea? I'm always on the lookout for more ways to use roses as edibles as that's the theme of our garden. This month our rose society is featuring Edible Santa Barbara magazine and its writers who will talk about how to include more rosy treats in our lives. I'm especially eager to try rose soda (rose syrup and soda water, I believe). tonotorose, thanks for reminding me that Devoniensis is at the top of my wish list. I really, really want this rose! And thanks to Ingrid for introducing me to Mme Dore. I'm always eager to find Bourbons that will do well in Southern California, and she's compact to boot! lilifinch, lori_elf and jumbojimmy named some great-sounding Austins - Windermere, Munstead Woods, Field of the Woods, Evelyn... I've been timid about the Austins in our area. So far all I have is Tamora and she's reasonably healthy but thirsty. She gives good value for the water, of course -- the blooms are the most fragrant in the garden so I know I need to try more Austins. I'm going to get a Prospero soon from some rose society friends as I've heard he does well here, and a garden club friend has an Evelyn that isn't totally happy but gives the most delicious blooms -- so I have to keep trying. Ykli- Isn't it human nature to be jealous and want what others have? Just kidding! It is a beautiful plant, and I'm happy for you, but I still really want one myself! I did get my Stanley order yesterday, and they are all very nice plants. Watch the new thread for pics hopefully later today of many of them! I was really disappointed though, I had several Calocedrus on the order and I guess they lost their whole crop over the winter. Might make me reconsider trying them here depending on what caused their demise in Oregon! They are rated to Zone 6 and though we are rated as 6 I still think we are a 5b at best. Though with careful selection of sites, I can usually keep Zone 6 plants alive with no problems. Keith- Thanks, I will contact you for the list. I have never ordered from Dennis though I always hear great things about him. I have been on the website several times before, but as you said it is wildly outdated...As mush as I hate to admit it, I am part of the modern McDonald's society that wants it Right Now!!! Eliot

Oh, how I envy you people who still have all the fun of picking out new roses every spring. I'm all out of space now that I ordered the Kordes rose Memoire and the groundcover rose Gourmet Popcorn.

On the other hand, as much as I miss the big spring orders, I have to admit that I have more roses than I can comfortably care for now--how some of you grow 100s of roses is beyond me, but more power to you if you can!

I made a new 80 square foot raised bed, so I had room for plenty of roses this year. Amazingly, I still have a couple of empty rose holes.
Hybrid Tea: Ingrid Bergman, Honor, Impulse, Loise Estes, Miss Kitty, Mohana, Irish Fireflame, and Mrs Oakley Fisher.
Polyantha: Wing Ding
English: Heritage, Pretty Jessica
Climbers: Golden Artic, American Pillar
Shrub: Salmon Vigorosa aka Electric Blanket and White Licorice

Note: a lot of these a are rather high maintenance for New England.

I ordered Antique Caramel Freelander, Bonanza Freelander, Laguana Freelander, Buxom Beauty, and Kosmos Fairytale. I've got two roses that might be dead, and if they are they will be replaced with Pope John Paul and Enchanted Evening.

Just got L.D. Braithwaite, Blue Skies and Joseph Lamb from Chamblees. Came through the week long trip with no damage. I think I'l put them along the south side of the house for maximum sun. My main rose garden is only good for Ragoskas and daylilies. I thought it was far enough away from the tree line on the south side of our yard but only gets morning sun.

Kate: I had to re-read your new roses list twice to make sure I read it right. You may want to keep your eye out on Gourmet Popcorn being a "ground cover" rose. Mine grew to be at least 6 feet tall before it succumbed to RRD. {{gwi:272718}}

I wasn't going to purchase any roses this year, however as I said earlier, Christopher Marlowe is dead or near dead, so I took him out of his pot and put him in the ground...just to be hopeful he recovers and survives. That left me with 1 open pot to use and of course...1 rose. With that said I was going to drive 45 minutes today to a nursery that was selling 3 gallon pots of Charles Darwin for $29.99(expensive I know). So, I was driving on the way to that nursery when I went past another nursery I stop by every now and then. In the past, they haven't had anything I really fancied, and they were typically Jackson and Perkins boxed roses which I'm kind of leary about. With that said, I surprisingly found some Star Roses that were "bagged" in pots...supposedly 2 gal although they were not even 1 gal in reality, however the roses were in great shape just like my previous Star Roses that I had purchased previously. They didn't have Carding Mill which I was considering, but they DID have Charles Darwin and they had a pretty nice one at that. With that said, I picked up a 1cu ft bag of pro-mix, a Charles Darwin for $16.99 and potted up my one and probably only new rose for the year. One benefit the more mature roses, is he starts on a more level playing ground with my other potted roses by already being budded up. Can't wait.

I forgot to include Charles Darwin in my list but was a little surprised to read on the label on the post above that it is pale yellow to light pink in color. I'd always read that it had a sort of mustard yellow color which some people on the forum really hated, but it intrigued me since I'm no longer a fan of bright yellow roses. I should find out tomorrow since I have a bud that's ready to open. My specimen isn't nearly as robust since it's an own-root rose from Vintage. Jeffcat, your rose looks really perfect. It shouldn't be too long until you have a bloom also.

Ingrid, I was somewhat surprised to see Charles Darwin described that way as well. The core color is a mildly deep to pale yellow, then as the bloom ages it fades to almost pure white...which I find attractive as a two tone colored rose shrub. With that said, Charles Darwin can SOMETIMES acquire a slight pink tinge in some instances. Here are some other's pics of CD.

Note Susan's CD linked below. If you look at the edges, it is every so lightly tinged in pink on the reflexed petals and outside edges of the bloom. This pink trend is not something I believe CD always has. It's one of those typical Austin color changes to his blooms depending on temperature and climate.

why don't you plant all your potted roses in the grounds? You seem to have a very large space.

My new 2010 roses:
1) Climbing Laguna (I was a bit hesitant at first. Hopefully it's a nice rose)

2) EVELYN (Sadly my Evelyn rose that was growing in the pot had died because we had a severe hail storm few months ago. So I'm ordering it again and decided to plant it in the ground)

3)St Swithun (I love roses with huge blooms, I hope I've made the right choice.)

4) Souvenir de la Malmaison (love the romantic look and colour of the blooms.

Haha Jimmy I have far from anything resembling space. That picture of Charles Darwin is actually the pot in my back driveway where it gets a couple more hours of sun per day. That arbor consists of my entire back yard pretty much and the front yard is full as well. On top of that, I only rent that location and will be moving from it in August. I planted 8(9 if CM survives) roses in the ground there. I have pretty much decided I am going to pot all the roses I grow from now on until I settle down somewhere and/or move to Europe/Italy and then I will go nuts and plant 100 a year. haha

maryl, thanks for the friendly warning about Gourmet Popcorn, but I think we may have a mix-up here. Helplmefind lists GP as about 20 inches tall and the pics shows a little sprawler. Perhaps you got a mislabled rose? At any rate, it better not grow big and tall cuz there is no room for such a rose in that spot and no other place open in the garden.

My 'Gourmet Popcorn' is about 3' after 9 years. For the first 7 years of its life it was engulfed by a daylily, which I finally moved. Perhaps it would be taller otherwise.

jumbojimmy my 'Laguna's are in their "leap" (third) year, and they are AWESOME! You won't be sorry, but it will take a while--they did nothing but grow green stuff the first two years.

Hi, I am new here. A hopeless addict, a confirmed floribunda-holic. Every year I tell myself I'm done, but end up spending a small fortune...I buy a large number of the same roses to form a cluster, and it looks atrociously beautiful, so I go out and buy more and more and more. Please help me stop ! [smile]

This year I got Cherish(es), Redbud(s), Collette(s), Climbing blaze(s), Miss All American Beauty(-ies), Disneyland(s), Heritages, Wild Blue Yonder(s), Charisma(s), more icebergs (of course! although I have amassed over 30 of them in all!), china dolls and a buncha apricot hybrid teas that I forget the names of.

I am hoping to feel understood and validated in my addiction ! LOL!

Roseberri, I don't grow Jude the Obscure and haven't seen Jude in person growing. With that said, Oakland Nursery in Columbus is selling Jude the Obscure. I wish Oakland would sell more Austins, but they don't. With that said, the Columbus Park of Roses FINALLY put some more Austin roses in the park this year. They added Charlotte and Jude the Obscure. Your newly purchased Hansa is blooming there as we speak and the scent is deep and provocative.

The 2 big nurseries in Columbus are Oakland and Strader's. Newark also has a good rose selection at Wilson's Garden Center. I'm not exactly sure where you are located, so I don't know what's closest.

which is a bit addicting for me! But am not familiar with the Columbus nurseries. I ordered some from Roses Unlimited and Rogue valley, and Heirloom Roses in addition to those I purchased at Wilson's.

Sadly, I'm just about out of room for any new roses. So this year I only added two new roses.

I have a few roses that have struggled the last year or two, so they will be the next to get shovel pruned when I find another rose that I simply can't do without. I'm limited for planting space, so any rose I have must perform or it is destined to be shovel pruned and replaced.

If only I had the space for roses that many of you seem to have...... maybe one day.

This was my first year planting roses and I'm a bit addicted already. Glad to see some of you are already planning next year's additions as I've been told I'm going over the edge for doing the same. At least I'm not the only one.

This was my second year planting roses, I limited myself to four last year but this year I expanded a bit.

Bare-roots: 2 Autumn Sunset Climbers, Midas Touch, Chris Evert, Helmut Schmidt, Gold Medal, Sunsprite, Fragrant Cloud. Tree Roses: Julia Child, Dream Come True, Sheila's Perfume, Sunsprite, Just Joey.

Bands: Abraham Darby, Golden Buddha, Jerri Jennings, Joyce Borden, Buff Beauty, Bishop Darlington, and lastly a custom rooted Secret Garden Musk Climber that I won't be receiving for a while.

So far all of the new roses have done well, except for the Fragrant Cloud which didn't like my somewhat shady garden and had to move to my mom's much sunnier home. She loves it and I am so jealous, I go over there to enjoy the fragrance.

Sorry Zaphod, Jungs must not know the difference between crown hardy and cane hardy. Autumn Sunset is a sport of Westerland, and Westerland was not cane hardy for me. It's pretty though if you can figure out a spot for it.

And yes, I've started my list for next year. I need to order early from Palatine since they sold out of a rose that I wanted this year.

Athenainwi, thanks for the heads-up. I knew it was a calculated risk per the forum regarding the Westerland issue. I emailed Jung's and they verified my, 'Cane hardy, right? Not just crown hardy?' query in the affirmative. If it doesn't fly I'm sure they'll give me a credit.

Regarding the selection for next year's roses - When you say 'order early,' what does that mean? By Labor Day, Halloween, or Christmas?

Sadly with this year's order of Lyda and Ebb Tide there is no room for any more. But I did get 3 friends to order roses which took the edge off. I don't know what I am going to do next year.

zaphod42--I usually order online between Christmas and New Years and have not had any problems with sold-outs; however, a number of posters on this forum probably make their spring order in October or November. Occasionally when I've tried a "late" order for spring--say, February--that is when I start running into "sold out."

Previewing my message really opened my eyes. Wow! Didn't realized I bought so many roses this year. Used to read people's post and think how can anyone buy so many roses. Oh well, guessed I'm addicted.

I don't even want to list all of what I got this yr. It's scary. I wasn't even supposed to order hardly any this time around, because I really am running out of room. But, like always, I end up blowing it and ordering more than I should've.

But my favorites of the new roses so far (some still haven't bloomed) are by far EASY DOES IT and FABULOUS. Both started off with a huge bang, and are looking to be good, healthy growers and bloomers from now on. EASY DOES IT rivals one of my favorites (REMEMBER ME) with gorgeous deep orange blended blooms that last a long time. And FABULOUS was a sort of afterthought. I had already gotten one order from Pickering, and then found what a beauty this rose was on HMF, so had to order it (along with a few others). So glad I did! It's going to be one beautiful bush when it reaches its full potential. But then, Poulsen roses are always good ones!
