Plant a healthy rose in healthy soil and you shouldn't need products like these. lol

I shy away from any product that does not tell me what the active ingredient is. It's probably just expensive fertilizer.

Very expensive fertilizer. LOL. Since it contains fertilizer it will make plant leaves look healthier. But, no more healthier than cheap fertilizer sprayed on leaves.
I'm just very leary of this product at the present time.

In racemic mixtures the odour is floral and citrus while epimerized mixtures exhibit a dense fatty floral odour with odor recognition thresholds of 15 part per billion .

Huh? I cannot see at all what this has to do with protecting roses. Maybe one of our resident chemists can chime in...

Well last year I planted my new rose bed..or I should say I started it. I paid attention to what I added in the way of soil..I added some mushroom compost and rose planting mix. These roses are doing very well so far this year with hardly nothing in the way of chemical sprays. So healthy soil does work.

From other papers I scanned, it appears that treatment may help fight against certain stresses but often at the expense of other properties such as growth.

A little pricey for my taste.

Pricey isn't the word for it. If one had a lot of roses to spray, they would have to 2nd and 3rd morgage there house to afford spraying it. lol

Jaz is touted as a foliar application to both prolong bloom life and strengthen the bush against environmental stress. Our climate IS environmental stress and many rosarians use products like Jaz, Cloud Cover or the no longer available Messenger. Some erect elaborate shade structures.

I made a pact with myself a few years ago... a $20.00 bush that requires $30.00 to live longer than 2 years is not welcome in my garden. My garden of 150 roses costs me an annual average of $9.00 per bush, mostly in water. This number would be higher if I used any chemical pest or disease control and didn't compost my own mulch.

While there might be some merit in using Jaz in a Phoenix garden, I'm awaiting results from local rosarians with deeper pockets.

Looks like a gimmick to me. I couldn't find anything on it that justified either the price or the claims. Superthrive (which is largely Vit B) is $5 a bottle and will work just as well (ie, a bit of a booster but not really necessary).

Good soil, good drainage, sufficient sun, air and water and a rose appropriate for your environment is all you need.

How did you all get to be experts about a product none of you have tried? To add a comment from someone who has actually used it - last year I did a semi-scientific test in my garden and found that it worked as well as Messenger. The active ingredient is a jasmonate which is a natural hormone that boosts rose immunity so they can tolerate harsh conditions better, so I had less heat stress and powdery mildew. And it's been endorsed by the American Rose Society after extensive testing.

I won't let my roses go through summer without a sprtiz.

I know nothing about this Jaz product, but the ARS's endorsement certainly would not do anything for me. They sell their endorsements, and should be seen as having the same persuasive power as is usual for paid advertising, and nothing more.

D2knits joined Gardenweb " April 09,2011" so either has just now discovered us, or has just now discovered the wonder of roses or just now felt the need to speak up to tout a product he/she knows from personal experience with how many roses and in what part of the country.

Question: how does one spritz protect new growth that comes after that spritz? What time fo the year did you spritz and what kinds (classes) of roses did you spritz?

My take is that some of us have grown hundreds of roses and know the costs of producing acceptable bushes (as well as blooms). Please don't attack us if you don't know us.

If it will protect my rose's from looking like crap in 125F heat I am willing to try it. I don't get to enjoy my rose's in the summer in the Arizona desert my growing season is when most of you are buired under the snow. I dread summers but have to stay her until hubby retires.
I am willing to try a product that claim's it will stop the stress my rose's are under in Jul, Aug & Sept. I will not build a cover in my front yard that I have to take down in the winter and apply and pay for a building permit with my city hall. A product I can spray would be easier and less expensive.
If I lived in Zones 5,6,7 & 8 I would poo poo this product too but when one struggles with 125F in the hot Az. heat you try anything to stop the roses from being under so much stress. I have tried tons of organic products to help with summer stress to no avail. I am always on the look out for products that are somewhat sold at a reasonable price( I would only need the 16oz size).If you lived here and put up with the ugly leaves, the proliferated blooms you would be looking for new products to stop that too, and they get plenty of water and mulch, I do not feed them in the summer because of burn. I think I will try it, unless someone here has a better idea then building a structure in my front yard.

Before using any spray in your garden, check to see what temperature is optimum for application. My issue with all these sprays is that they can't be applied when temps are over 80F.

I'm still the only one on the thread who has used it.

My jab was not at your experience as rose growers, because I know you grow better roses than me. My jab was at the level of vitriol expressed towards a product no one in the thread had tried.

To answer your question, I spritzed them when they first leafed out in mid-March and kept applying it once a month until they began to go dormant in the fall. I'm in Northern CA. while our temperatures aren't Arizona-like, it often gets into the 90s during the day.

What kind of roses do you grow?

This is important because of some classes have an aversion to certain sprays (Daconil being hated by Double Delight and rugosas hating most sprays, just as a start of a list)

Well, I've tried it and had disappointing results. I,like Carrie AZ, was looking for a way to help my roses (container garden of 25 minis/mini-floras) cope with the heat. I moved to TX last year, lost a couple new additions and suspected heat stress played a big part.

This year, hoping to avoid losing any, I got the Jaz spray in early April, mixed slightly less than the suggested strength of 3T in 32oz water and sprayed a small test patch on one of my minis. The next morning
everything looked good, so I went ahead and sprayed the rest of my roses
including a new mini-flora Baldo Villegas which I had had for about a month. The plant was healthy and had been doing quite well putting out new growth,etc. I sprayed in the early AM, and in fact the day was overcast and windy.

When I checked later that evening Baldo Villegas had lost a few new leaves. Over the course of the next two days, it completely defoliated and showed signs of burn on the cane tops. I tried to baby it along, but I still
lost it.

I had not done anything other than spraying the Jaz and the reaction was pretty immediate. I now have a basically full bottle of Jaz that I'm not willing to risk using again.

I would NEVER buy a product which offered so little information. I am not an organic gardener but choosing expensive and mysterious sprays over the most obvious solutions of finding the right plants for the right places (and some people on this forum grow roses in ovens) or even accepting defeat and growing lemons instead (I would love to have a succulent garden, with South African bulbs...but it's not really going to happen)
Still, I am not a horticultural luddite and have embraced stuff like the equally expensive mycchorhizal granules but, even this product has been touted as a miracle worker in all sorts of situations. So, I wouldn't dismiss it but I wouldn't buy it either without a lot more evidence of both efficacy and toxicity plus considered anecdotal reasons for adopting this from people without a specific agenda (ie. to sell you stuff) but personal experience of its use.
