How large do these roses grow?
Comments (23)My DdB and Mrs BR Cant were new last year. I lost DdB to the polar vortex this winter, but replaced her and added Archduke Charles this year. They are all in full sun all day and seem to handle that just fine. I'm not sure how DdB would do here with shade. She was bad to ball and had some mildew (very rare here) until things started to heat up. MBRC balled some earlier in the season, too, but both are doing okay now. (my DdB came from Petals from the Past, so evidently they don't have the non-mildewy version). Its been in the upper 90's all this week; heat index in the lower 100's due to the humidity. Here's a picture of DdB from this morning with the same blooms that have been on her all week. And here's what she looked like Wednesday:...See MoreHuge old Duchesse de Brabant
Comments (15)I had never heard the theory that roses live shorter lives in warm climates - interesting. Perhaps they were talking about grafted HTs? (For some reason, I have noticed that some folks in the last 50-60 years said things about "roses" when what they were really talking about were HT roses.) The really old roses I have are chinas or teas (or hybrids thereof like LV), or polyanthas. They are all on their own roots, or at least they are by now. I have never seen a "sucker" on any of them. Maybe they are closer genetically to the roses that are native to warm climates than whatever ones that theory applies to, and so of course they are happier in warm climates. Just guessing... Re shedding leaves, I have not paid much attention, but I have the vague idea that the old beat up leaves do fall off as the new growth emerges, whether that is in the Fall/Winter or especially the Spring. When I said 12 month growing season I did not mean to imply that the roses bloom as much in the Winter, it's just that they never altogether stop (I can remember one winter 20 years ago when they did stop - it was below 20 degrees F here for 2 weeks, day and night, without stopping. Lost several plants, but none of the roses, even the chinas or teas.) I love discovering rose "conventional wisdom" that turns out to be wrong-does anyone remember a source for the "roses do not live as long in warm climates" theory? Comments (9)Lilyfinch, thanks for your kind words and well-wishes. I'm hoping to be out of the hospital soon, to finish mending at home with the hope of supervising some garden work until I'm healed enough to resume myself. Ingrid, I got Duchesse de Brabant as a one-gallon from Chamblees. Your many posts inspired the purchase, and I'm delighted to have this rose, even if it only does bloom during cooler weather. I'm growing it in conditions opposite yours: only a few hours of the strongest afternoon sun, so I'm impressed it does as well as it does. Regarding the yucky stuff, I became a beached whale after a minor injury that incapacitated me. When I couldn't get an expedited appointment to take care of the injury, I floundered trying to take care of myself, and ended up with multiple fractures, torn ligaments in several areas, including one torn all the way off, three stage three decubitus ulcers, and a suspected DVT. So here am, still hospitalized, getting stabbed in the belly with injections every night, after almost three months, when I should have been up and running in a few days. Thank God I'm in the hands of exceptional and caring physicians, nurses, and therapists -- some of them friends, former classmates, and clients. The hospital is set in a lovely and serene garden, which makes me yearn to get back to my own gardens all the more --- SOON! And I'll have roses waiting to be planted when I get there! Sammy, I'll have to check out Miss Caroline. But I agree -- DdB is a very pretty rose and I'm so glad I discovered this one thru Ingrid and the forum....See MoreJust How Large Do OGR's Roses Become???
Comments (22)Thank you all for the input. I hope gardeners from zone 7 ( pushing the zone for some of these) will chime in too as I have R ead interest from gardeners there wanting to plant some of the very special roses. I have the Vintage catalog, but am between homes, and it is in storage... somewhere. The OGR roses I have are: Duchesse de Brabant Mrs. B.R. Cant Clementina Carbonieri Vicomtesse d' Avesne Mlle. Sombreuil Madame Joseph Schwartz Caroline Marinesse Mme. Isaac Periere Belle Vichysoisse Blush Noisette Paul Neyron Baronne Prevost SDLM bush and climber Francis Dubreuil Reine des Violettes These are the roses that I can think of off hand. What is most shocking to me thus far is the report for Mrs. B.R. Cant. I have 3, and was thinking it would grow to a width of about 8'... but Catspa...14'... WOW!!! We built our new home for us, but my husband often states that the land/yard is for me and my roses. It looks as though I will need the land....all of it... Luxrosa, recently as I perused rose magazines, my husband noticed a soft pink climbing rose that was so large, he likened it to the size of a tree...seems as though Mermaid would qualify as "tree size" if left on its own... Jacqueline, I hope Houzz gets it together and you are able to post images again. I always enjoy seeing images of your beautiful garden. Sow_what, your gardens and work at the Humpty Dumpty House are inspiring!! I am still considering Claire Austin because of the images you have posted and your reports regarding the performance of this rose. Jerijen, it isn't an antique, but what is the general range for Grandmother's Hat growing in a warm climate? BTW... I now have 3 G.H. too... thank you:) Lynn...See MoreSow_what?
