J0nd03- that ft.mcnair is a beautiful tree. Ill have to see what the specs are on it as far as tolerances/preferences. Tornado- no offense taken at all, I'm quite long winded myself (I am a car salesman!) and I love taking politics but unfortunately from what I have learned (perhaps its the area we live in?) most discussions about politics/govt matters turn into a pissing contest/yelling match because when someone has a differeing view than I yet cannot support their claims/reasons for their beliefs they get defensive and resort to un civilized behavior. I think it's hilarious but sure you have experenced it as well! ;) I really appreciate the info your giving me. From what I have read/picked up from folks (a good friend of mine is a horticulture major/landscape business owner) these beech trees will maintain their vibrant foliage as long as they are kept hydrated. I'm site the tree in your pics gets pruned/pest control done professionally and regularly but I'm not sure about the watering part too much?

Thanks Josh and Mike for the encouragement! I guess that is really what I was looking for, someone to tell me it might be ok! LOL! I never had such a tragedy in my whole citrus 'career'. I do think I will lose 2 small young citrus I have, a key lime, which I know will be easy to replace, and a variegated Tiger Navel, which will not be as easy to replace. I got one from Logees a year and a half ago, and do not know if they even sell it anymore. I am just hoping the trees that I have that are 3 years or more will be ok. It just hurts to know I had nice plants from Four Winds get really root damaged in a matter of 2 months. As you know, they are not cheap. Good. News today I had an electrician come over and give me an estimate for a 2 circuit outdoor outlet for the greenhouse! So I can have enough electricity for 2 heaters when it gets below 15F, which is not much. But I will be atleast able to use some heat mats at the same time as the heater. So even if the air gets down to 40F, I can still have the soil above 50F at the least. Anyone ever make a bottom heater out of rope lights and sand instead of buying expensive heat mats? I have 3 separate heat mats but would like something that I can get in a section. My Solexx greenhouse is 8X16 long, and would like to get one half side of one side of the greenhouse of 4X8' to make a heated bottom for citrus only. The figs I have that take up a lot of space do not need such heat. So I am trying to figure out the best way to get my citrus to get warm roots this winter due to the recent damage, otherwise, Previous years have been just fine. Tanks! Christy

For young tree's this can be common. I have a very small second year tree propagated last fall, that wintered in my garage, and has not yet leafed out this year. While I brought it in for the winter, it was hit with a frost that hurt the tips and buds prior to bringing it in. Over the last 6 weeks (when it should have leafed) the tree has progressively lost its branches (gone from green when scratched to brown.) Finally today, I saw a small green bud at the soil line. If the bud makes it ... this will be the new tree. The old tree will be pruned once it dies completely. They are oriental lilies.. maybe stargazers or similar ? They will probably return, but my guess is that they will come back a lot smaller. I had a large lily eaten the ground last year (deer) and instead of one tall thick stem (used to be about 6 foot tall and 1" in diameter) I had one 3 foot stem 1/4" diameter this spring. The lily was a very nice asiatic "grand paradiso". My guess is that it will take take 1-2 seasons for your lilies to recover completely. The lilies expend a lot of energy in early spring on growth, and they rely on a few months of green growth after flowering to build up energy for next year's bloom. this is why deadheading (removing spent flowers before seed pods form) and fertilizing at this time helps tremendously. The lily will then spend the next 3-4 months recharging for following year. I like to fertilize my lilies in early spring and then again just as the plants bloom (or just after). I do not fertilize in late fall.
