treating crown gall on Cl. America

I was both PO'd and saddened last week when I found my Cl America had a bad case of crown gall. It was visible at the soil line, and had been hidden by groundcover. This is one of my favorite roses in my garden, and in it's 5 years has had great displays of blooms throughout the seasons. I refuse to dig it up. I am going to go against the rule of tossing the plant and treating the soil. After finding the problem, I removed the ugly gall, and dumped about a gallon of water mixed with bleach around the base of the plant. None of the groundcover or rose shows signs of trauma from this treatment, but I am going to do another treatment this week. I also don't see the gall growing back, but of course I don't know whats going on deep in the soil.

Anyways, has anyone out there tried any desperate home made brews to treat this problem? I don't plan on removing this rose until I see it on it's last leg. I know I am going against the odds.
