BG 75 blower. Difficulties to attain speed.

I'll try to be as thorough as possible.

Symptoms: Starts well cold, idles perfectly. Have to goose the choke a lot and get it good and hot before it will run at high speed. Then it will continue to run at speed for as long as you want. On a hot restart it will only idle unless you have a lot of time to hang around. Will sometimes get to high speed eventually. Muffler looks clean. No carb adjustment changes the symptoms. As stated good start and idle, cold or hot. Will be checking flywheel tonight. Oh yeah, occasionally it wil speed up gradually with no throttle applied. Could be important to the experts here. Thanks!

2 things to check: Muffler screen, and air filter! Try running it without muffler and air filter sponge! Might be one or other, or both!
Had a nice weed wacker given to me--wouldn't run past an idle--turned out to be clogged spark screen in muffler--gave same symptoms as outlined in your message!

Hi Rusty. Thanks. I removed spark screen years ago. Also tried it briefly without muffler. Air filter seems okay but I haven't thorughly cleaned it or tried without it. Will do asap!

Yes, in a sense. It won't really start but as Canguy says more of a burp. You may hear others use some other term. This was always the way to start 2 strokes prior to leaner running emission engines and for todays engine it hold true in most cases. However, todays engines once in a while will produce an odd ball and that little burp is almost hard to hear, if any background noise is present it may not be heard. First, use the method just as Canguy said but keep in mind that regardless, if you hear nothing, get it off of choke after 3 or 4 pulls or you risk flooding. All that said, the BG55 uses a very crummy Zama carb. The latest versions work a lot better then the early versions but it still is sub standard carb. The newer versions have a fully adjustable carb with limiter heads. If yours is older with less then a fully adjustable carb you will always be prone to more problems. One last note. Pumping the purge bulb and a properly working non running engine will never flood the engine.Purging simply cycle fuel though the carb and back to the tank to assure the carb body is full of fresh fuel. None is dumped into the throat. This is why it is not really correct to call it a primer but to call it a purge. Few 2 strokes have both a true primer and a choke. They use one or the other. In fact the only 2 stroke I can recall that used both a primer and a choke was the Suzuki 2 stroke that used to come on some models of Toro lawn mowers.

Even though I was using STIHL Ultra oil, I found what looked like too much carbon on the spark plug. I had been using 3oz of oil per gallon of premium gas. Under advice from others, including tech support, I went to 2.6oz per gallon of gas for a 50:1 mix, instead of 3.0oz for a 42.6:1 mix. My spark plug now stays much cleaner. I also checked the valve clearance for the 2nd time and found it needed vary little decrease in gap compared to the first time I checked it at about 150 hrs. So far, it still starts easily and runs great. There was still a lot of oil accumulation under the valve rocker cover with the 50:1 mix. I guess it proves using more oil than recommended is not a good thing. Charles Ranheim

I am on natural gas and when I started playing with the air shutter I found that they needed to be almost all the way open to maybe a little closed to get the perfect flame and no lifting. While you really had to close the air shutter almost completely to get a orange/wobbly flame and smoke. I found that the rest of the adjustments gave a blue flame. However, there was lifting or what I will call blending of the flames. For example, on most of the burners, when the port was 50-75% closed, the inner most ring would be a wider fuzzy flame that did look like it was lifting but would meld together. When you got a little shy of full open, I found that this gave the most individual tight flames on each port. While adjusting up and down a quarter turn didn't at first seem to make much of a difference, I noticed lifting on some ports. You also can feel the difference in heat output on high as well. The tighter the flames got and no lifting on all ports, I could feel a noticeable change. I also found that by doing this when its dark out and can turn off/down the lights its much easier to see the flame. Sort of like Trevor's video. What might look like a nice flame can turn out to really be lifting under regular lighting. Although, I adjusted I am not sure if mine is OK or not. I haven't had a chance to re-simmer yet. Thus, not sure if I did it right yet ;).

I have a newer Stihl BG85 blower with less than 10 hours of use and have had similar problems as the original poster. Cold starts are fine; use throttle lock, prime a couple of times, choke, and it starts right up. Hot restarts are usually ok, but at times you have to baby the throttle to keep it running.

The real problems are warm restarts, say after resting for 15 minutes to an hour. I try to treat these as hot restarts with no choke and no priming, but it is a chore to keep it running if it restarts. Once you can get it running it's idle only for probably 30-60 seconds or it will die right out. These warm restarts typically take 5-10 pulls to get it idling, and then 4 to 5 repeated sequences before it will stay running. Very frustrating. I've tried treating it as a cold start, with the choke on but that seems to make matters worse. Any thoughts?

FWIW, I also own a Shindaiwa 488 chainsaw - it's the model of perfection for 2 stroke starting. For cold starts it's 3 pulls without fail; the first pull I always fail to remember how much compression the saw has and I never get a full pull (grin), the second pull it sputters to life, shut off the choke and the third pull gets it running. Warm or hot restarts are accomplished with one pull like clockwork. I wish I had purchased a Shindaiwa leaf blower as well.

Hmmm. Sounds just like me except if I keep it choked on the hot start I can at least keep it idling...and it will start on one or two pulls. The 85 I understand has a different ignition and timing system from the 75. I haven't found the problem yet. Once it a while it behaves just to throw me completely off track!!

Sounds like your problems are fuel related, first check your fuel lines and filter, then disassemble the carb
and clean out thoroughly, especially the passage below the
inlet needle [remove the needle], and the brass jet beside the needle, then reassemble, and see what happens.
