Thank you so much for your message. I do have a child but he is 18 and soon off to college, so now all my roses are my "babies".

Jem! Thank you. I was already thinking of sharing this before reading your post. Conversation with my 16-year old today: "How come you agreed to this?" he asks. Raised eyebrow. "I know why people celebrate Mothers' Day. Why are you agreeing to do it?" he amplifies. "Because of the size of babies' noses," I reply without thinking. He raises his eyebrows. I can tell he's already starting to regret the conversation and I have to stand by my remark now lol. "Well," I explain. "They're really very small, babies' noses; very easy to pinch and it will probably only take a few minutes. Next time your mother p*sses you off, think about that for a moment." Happy Mother's Day everyone. We will be having a cookout at Amber and Mike's with everyone pitching in and bringing food. We are not going to have ours until around five in the evening. I went to a Mother / Daughter banquet at our church this evening. Had a nice meal prepared by the men, I think mostly by the preacher. Had cubed steak with brown gravy, chicken tenders, mashed potatoes, green beans, cottage cheese and coleslaw. For dessert we had ice cream, sherbet and some little pastry things with fruit in them. I hope everyone had a fabulous Mother’s Day! My girls and I got out into the yard- I planted 3 of the four Austin’s, finished mulching the main beds and fertilizing, and got the Barden Bed half weeded, so I feel quite accomplished. Still have more weeding, mulching, and edging but things are getting there! Lily planted her first plant- a tiny boxwood that came free with my polyantha order.

That's so nice of you, Karl. Gary spent all day working in the gardens with me yesterday, so that was a wonderful Mother's Day gift in itself. I planted roses, and he transplanted minis and mulched. He is very talented artistically as far as creating gardens and adding interesting stonework, etc. We never knew it til now. :0)

It's kind of lonely having all 3 of our kids out of the house now. One in Guam, one on Long Island, and our youngest lives only 10 miles away right now, so we're meeting her for dinner at Moe's (Mexican cantina style food) in about an hour.

Hope you all have a nice day as well!

P.S. We owe our love of rose gardening to Mother's Day 2000. We had nothing better to do that day than to visit a garden center that day, and see our first Austin rose in a box. I thought I couldn't grow a marigold, much less a rose, but Gary bought me Teasing Georgia and Falstaff, and the rest is history!

Thank you, Karl. Had a lovely day - one son bought me two bottles of great wine; the younger one, a bouquet of roses (to tide me over until mine bloom) and chocolates. What more could I ask for?

My day isn't over yet. I still have pub food with the hubby (kid-free) to look forward to.

Thank you so much, Karl. My day was especially nice because my sons (19 & 16)had bought me new pruners and took me to a nursery and let me pick out another rose. They even prepared the hole for me. I chose "Pearly Gates". Later on I was taken to dinner, and around 8PM my DH brought out a cake he had hidden.
